Do you think if the "quality" electronica was what you were dancing to, you would still have become interested?

I really think the cheezy stuff has its place in the mainstream, to get people interested enough to explore what's "underground". Just my thoughts.....any retorts??

Somebody said this on another forum and I more or less agree with this:

cheese = the overal artistic value a track has when produced with one purpose in mind : sell as many copies as possible
so it's full of clichés = structure and drumrolls and bassline and melody type, commonly used sounds that go for immediate effect, no multiple possible interpretations, no multi-layered sounds.
these tracks all mostly have a mellow feel to them, and always appeal somewhat good on first hearings as they are engineered to do so. that's also why they work to some extent quite well in clubs and on raves, because they have a straight to the point attitude, everyone can feel the effects easily, it is bright transparent music and very expressionistic in it's nature : the message it contains is easily understood by everyone( for which i believe it has a very important role as a stepstone to more sophisticated music)

everyone has to admit, by ignoring the consiousness of the low-quality production, when they open themselves to this music and allow themselves to just experience it, the effects of cheese can be quite strong, especially when on E's
luckily there's more to trance than cheesy trance, but trance would not be complete without cheesy trance

the strength of cheese lies in the fact that it's simple not complex.it's impressionistic and aimed at a very direct form of cummunication through music

of course there are different variety's of cheese
older= dated
bad = just completely out of touch with even the creators themselves, a pure waste of time
young = good ideas and a bit of originality, but just a rushed job

Why? A track can be trance but still cheesy. But being cheesey doesn't mean that it isn't trance.

The first tracks I took notice of were the cheesier ones, but it didn't last long. And now I can't stand many of my old favourites

Bit off the point here, but i was asked by some ppl the other day to tell them exactly what the difference was between Trance and Dance - like i know what the difference is but I found it very hard to explain it rite - anybody lend a hand?

I must admit that cheese trax are what got me hooked. Alice DeeJay Better off alone/want you back in my life along with Out of the blue at a mostly cheese club in 2000.

From what I've noticed and experienced
Most of the tunes are catchy and have ear-pleasing (albiet oftentimes campy) rhythms. Listening to these songs over and over gets one who isnt' used to hearning any sort of electronic music to get really acclimated to electronic music. Then they go into the "deeper" sounds...and the journey begins.

well this will without a doubt turn into a drawn out debate. but to keep it simple i always think that songs are cheese IF:

a)they were at one time trance, and are now assoc more with pop music. alt some songs were always pop (Vengaboys) but have been brought back to trance (Kiss [airscape]).

b)people dont like them. this is usually what cheese means here. its just personal preference, and even tho some people have an extremely skewed taste when it comes to trance - its usually just people that start 'hating' a song cause its pop. when really its just played too much.

c)they drift dangerously close to that Dj Irene cheese known as hard house...heh. this is a test cause its MY personal preference(see b). shes still fat and shitty and prolly a lesbian tho.

It's so damned true! The cheezy tracks that got me into Trance were songs like Alice Deejay's - Better off Alone, Miss Jane's - Fine Day, Kaycee's Escape (Not the signum mix!!!), Braveheart remix, and ATB Till I come (Original).



That's about it. The rest is history. I started getting deep into Trance, and I began to love the 'real' deep stuff.
