We have been undergoing renvations here in the studio since Ive switched production partners. We are working on a full 2x g5 power mac set up with Logic Pro 7.. and we have a question...
When it comes down to DSP cards we have found that there are two major ones TC electronics Powercore and the UAD cards.. Were looking some advice from ppl that have had first hand time working with these cards and the pros and cons.. So if anyone on here that has worked with either or both systems let us know how they respond when working on projects..

Have heard nothing but good reviews of the TC electronics unit. Know nothing about the other.

They both bring something to the party.

The UAD Compressors are to die for, the TC brings a collection of cool tools (Not least you can get a Virus on there!).

Personally get both, or a bigger computer and do it native. ;-)

We are debating on doing like ATB and a couple of other producers and running a central system with the other machines tied in but ive read that the EQ and Compressors on UAD are to die for,, but were also wondering about ease to use and interface options but ya we have considerd getting both.

seen two 'mix video's' that totally sweat the T.C.'s... mainly rock producers though...

UAD cards rape multi core processors, just so you know. I dont know if that computer you speak of is multi core or not, but yeah, might become an issue in future.

Yeahm check out the duende, if thats not your cup of tea, look at the Focusrite liquid mix, especially if you want mainly EQ and compression. OBviously if you wan't the TC virus emulation then this doesn't apply. I prefer this type of hardware VST to the card based things but then again, I can't afford either so its a bit irrelevant

Oh yeah, by the way, having multiple systems is awesome, definately recommended, especially if you use cubase so you can system link them

Sorry I should have explained a bit better...

The way UAD cards schedule things to get processed doesn't play nice with dual cores etc. - which have the possibility of processes getting out of sync. I know that is the basics of it, you would have to look it up in detail yourselves. At the moment, supposedly Reaper handles UAD cards with multi-core processors the best, but it is still far from ideal.

Powercore doesn't have this problem AFAIK. Also, it may be an issue with the UAD drivers (probably is) so there may be a resolution some time in the future.

i think the time for those DSP cards is almost over. you can have native plugins which sound as good as those dsp stuff and you can run a lot more of those plugins on the CPU than on DSP. and with native plugins you are not limited to hardware (pci slots, ...)

I agree actually, the main reason I think this is, is because people enforce proprietry standards, I mean, you can't run a VST on a powercore or UAD and you can't run a UAD or Powercore plugin on pro tools or natively, and of course, TDM plugins won't run on anything other than your $50 000 digidesign tapedeck

Who can be stuffed with all this rubbish? We can't because its not flexible enough to allow us to distribute our processing properly, the designers can't because pandering to one board maker limits their market so much!

Its not that the idea of extra DSP boards is a bad one, far from it, but the way that manufacturers have forced closed systems on musicians has completely killed the entire concept.

Which is why I like the new hardware VST gear, its not too proprietry (VST is relatively open) but still gets some work off your processor! Hurrah for the future
