What makes a rave a rave?

I've always wondered about this. Looking at it from another angle, what's not a rave?

What stops most of the rooms in The Guvernment from being a rave?

Is it that it is known on a commercial level and raves are only underground and hard to find out about?

Is it because it's not a special event and takes place every weekend?

Or is it that it's completely legal and is not at a risk of being raided? And if that is the case.. does this make WEMF not a rave?

A rave is what all the above are not

A rave (sometimes referred to as a rave party or simply a party) is an all-night dance event where DJs and other performers play rave music and other types of electronic dance music.

ps: if you have to ask "is this a rave?", you haven't been to one.

the word 'rave' is like, so, 1997

i dunno. the only time i use the word rave is to make a distinction to people (who know little about EDM) between guv events and regular clubs.. just a euphemism for saying long sketchy dance music parties i guess. when i think of real raves i think about parties in old warehouses or fields, with candy kids, girls dressed as fairies, cargo pants, etc. and old sounding EDM... not that i've experienced it first hand or anything, but i imagine the atmosphere was much, much different than even the most hype events that happen anywhere around here and that was a part of what defined it.

i guess everything today is simply 'after-hours partying/clubbing'?

Yeah. If you have to ask if it's a rave, then it's not a rave.

And if you call it a rave, but it's not a rave, then it's still not a rave.

A large part of the 'rave' experience rests upon the venue - specifically, it's inherent lack of predictability of what kind of experience you'll have within its walls (or lack thereof).

Clubs lose this quality VERY quickly and are forced to compete with regards to sound, talent and their regular clientele.
