craigslist.com is the best site for roommates and apartments. try viewit.ca also for a flat. if you have the money, stay downtown, but theres a lot of places that are easily accessible to downtown. download the ttc map to get an idea of times. (from either islington station in the west or victoria park in the east, it takes about 30 mins to reach the downtown (spadina - st george)

click on a section and it will give you the neighbourhood names

http://www.torontoneighbourhoods.net/search/search.html

again, if you are far out of the downtown core, pay close attention to the TTC (if you're not driving). Our transit system is brutal, and there are many areas that are a pain in the ass to get to

Torontorentals.com is also very large for condo searching.

Rent in the downtown area varies depending on the specific region, but generally for a bachelor you aren't going to get cheaper than about $700 for an above ground.

if you decide to share expect to pay in the range of $500-600 (i have seen shared accommodation listings as high as $1000)
as spitty said best resource for shared accommodation is craigslist.org you can also have a look at pay sites where you create a profile and pay for the roomate matching service, i am not sure of the names, try googling them

on your own you will pay at least 700 for a bachelor, generally rates are 800-900
best apartment site imo is viewit.ca, try also rentersnews.ca

all of these are just general guidelines and lots depends on your preferences, budget and where your work is located.
when you move is it possible for your work to arrange for some sort of temp stay so you can have some time to look around and find a place that is suitable for you?
or to come to TO and check out some places and neighbourhoods before you make a commitment?
pm me if you need more info

for $700.. you get a pretty shit place to.

stay away from st. james town and regent park area's. just a lot of dumpy apartments/buildings. though some nice pads can be found along the outskirts of those areas.

Where is your new job going to be located?
That would influence a lot of my own decision on where to live - the TTC can suck up a lot of time if you have to rely on a crappy route.

I split the $1200 rent in my 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment with my BF - I am near little italy/chinatown/annex and also have a pretty large deck (about 150-200sq ft?) - I think this is an usually good deal though.
