Byron Bay Trance/House Scene vs Sydney, Melrboune, Amsterdam!?

Hey all,

I'm trying to make a decision about going out to SAE in one of these cities to pursue audio engineering/music production. It's either going to be Amsterdam or Byron Bay (maybe even Sydney or Melbourne). Any thoughts? Byron Bay seems amazingly beautiful from the photos vs cloudy Holland, but in reality, I want to make sure I'm in the right place to network and surround myself with opportunities in dance music.

Appreciate the input!

I've been told they have a pretty decent psy scene in Byron (it's all hippies out there after all), not sure what you'd get by way of other trance or house though.

Wouldn't it kind of be a granted that melbourne or amsterdam would have much larger dance scenes?

In terms of trance, psy is pretty big over there from what ive heard .. not sure about other forms of trance, i cant really recall seeing much in terms of tour dates etc before when you see a trance dj's tour schedule

As for house etc i know there is a couple of clubs like La La Land (who are onelove affiliated) that get some of the big names but obviously also miss out on a lot too .. even though la la land is probably one of the more popular spots its not very big at all

If your main concern is a thriving EDM scene, i would personally choose Amsterdam .. but, if the idea of going abroad doesnt really appeal to you and melb and syd are actually an option there is ample opportunity to get involved in the industry .. i dont consider myself someone that has sucked a lot of dick for gigs or groupies it up but ive made a shitload of pretty up there contacts just through friends and going to events .. it's been effortless networking because the opportunities just present themselves.

I think that as long as youre not a total gaycvnt and you have some people skills and general music knowledge skills/whatever you shouldnt find it too hard to get involved.

Thanks for the info, Tony. Actually, I'm not from Australia at all, I'm from LA... either way it's a big move!

oops sorry .. i looked at Taranis' location and not yours when i was replying

Amsterdam and the majority of Europe in general will definately have the bigger scenes and being in Europe you will have a further reach etc but you have to take into consideration that with that size comes alot of market saturation so it's a bit of a tussle .. over here both Syd and Melb have big enough and thriving scenes but were in our little Recluse down under which is why there isn't too many Australians that are known on a global scale

Byron in terms of size etc is pretty pale in comparison

Byron is def. psyc trance - that's if you find a place that plays it. I lived in Byron for a while, and the only people bring alt. music are the backpackers (namely the Irish who spin at the local up-market club) Otherwise it's commercial or guitar based scene. Biggest issue would be cost of living. Byron is more expensive than Sydney.

Sydney I won't even mention.

Melb. would be obvious choice. Saying that, I love the Dam. So many interesting people, beautiful scenery, and cheap drugs (if thats what your after) Again cost of living there would be a slut.
