1) Make an empty, separate partition (using Partition Magic, Fdisk, or a magnet and a steady hand)
2) Copy everything you want to backup to the new partition
3) Format the old partition (probably C: ) where your OS (there's no X in the abbreviation for operating system ) and reinstall WinXP to C:

That's how I would do it. Have the plus of a formatted partition (always better to install an OS on a clean partition / drive) without having to lose your data.

ditto +1. i have made that mistake when i actually thought Millenium was a "good product" back in the day, and installed it on 1 partition. boy was i wrong. after that mistake (and not knowing about partition magic, so most of my data), everytime i install a new OS on a hard drive, i make 2 partitions.

UPDATE:

ok...so i tried to switch to XP, everything was going good until the second part of instalation where a window appeared saying "you can't install XP with Vista running. OWNED!" (not really...but i found it that way >

i tried for 5 times...but stupid windows (both XP and Vista) never agreed to eachother.

then i had to reinstall Vista, with the most standard version, no drivers, etc

now my screen looks like shit (poor resolution), my RAM is running out (i dunno how that happens if its fresh installed...) and lost most of my good running software.

good thing (the only) is that Vista installation kept "My Documents" folder so i didnt lose any very file of mine

so...i guess i have to stick with Vista

No you can reinstall XP but your going to have to boot from the xp cd to do it. Go into your BIOS settings and change your boot settigs to boot from CD first. Then restart with the XP install CD in the drive. Press enter when a line similar to "Press any key to boot from CD...".

You will probably have to format to get XP on the drive though.

For future reference people, Microsoft has a program that you can download off their site for free that scans all of your programs and hardware on your computer and tells you whether it will work with Vista or not. Don't just install Vista blindly.
