Moving to LA - Need advice from locals!!

Sorry if this is in the wrong place but....

As London is now officially the most expensive place to live on earth (not to mention the club scene being at an all time low) I'm going to be moving to LA in a few months and I'm considering studying the production course at LARS. It aint cheap but it's about the same price as the usual suspects in London (SAE etc.) but is better in terms of living costs (i.e. £1 = $2 etc.). It looks amazing on paper but I was wondering if anyone has an first hand experience of it? I've heard some positive things but also many very negative things about full sail so was not going to consider it. Should I look at this too?

I'm not a complete noob when it come to LA, having lived for just under a year in Santa Monica (which was one of the best experiences in my life) but as this was about 8 years ago I'm sure a lot has changed (subway for one!):
Venice was a no go area after sun down, and hollywood was OK at night as long as you had a car or taxi both ways. Is this still true? I was just thinking go back to Santa Monica as the beach is on the doorstep, it's safe for my girlfriend and everything is located fairly close. Am I still right on these points?

If any one can help a UK TA, I'd be really thankful and for any other useful info (how to find an apartment, where to buy a dirt cheap car, areas to avoid, good clubs/nights/record stores etc.)

LARS? Never heard of it.

For apartments, you can look on Craigslist: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/apa/

Also, you can go on www.WestsideRentals.com but I think you have to pay to be a memember on there.

If you're planning on moving to Santa Monica and want to party in Hollywood, I recommend getting a car. There aren't any subways that go from Hollywood to Santa Monica, and I don't think buses are open that late/early.

I think it's pretty expensive to live in Santa Monica. Just look on the 2 websites I posted to compare prices in different cities. I live in Hollywood and hate it! It's so ugly, dirty, smoggy, and noisey here! I want to live by the beach again!! (I used to live in Redondo Beach area)

The better clubs in LA are Vangaurd, Avalon, King King, etc... they are all in Hollywood.

hahaha... Julia doesn't even like CA, she hates everything about it.
I don't have any suggestions for places to live but Redondo Beach does look & sound nice as well as the surrounding areas.

As for clubs/venues, there are plenty and each one has a different vibe/crowd. It all depends on what tickles your fancy.

i highly recomend redondo beach as well.. its where i live! .. it is a bit of a drive from hollywood (not bad though.. the traffic is never rough club hours for me. the downfall is it is a bit pricey but u can definetly find some cheaper things. it doesnt have quite as much going on as santa monica but its got enough. the traffic is never too bad inside of the city during the day either!

DJ Rann im also researching recording/production schools. A better source for your search might be the links below or the Production portion of this site, let me know what you decide on when you find one.

Hey, I live in LA (just south of downtown) at USC. I have pioneer CDJ-200s. You can come over anytime you want and use them if you want. PM me or email me at mitzman at usc dot edu if you want to use them.

I'm always up for a good music playing session.

Both SAE and LARS have brand new facilities in Hollywood just across the street from one another.

SAE offers an open house every quarter, LARS has more of an open door policy to check-out the facilities.

It's a toss-up between the two programs, better to check it out yourself
