Relegate the bastards!!!

Inter Milan suspected of false accounting

ROME (AFP) - Inter Milan were on Wednesday accused of presenting false accounts before the start of the 2005-06 season, but the title they won that season is not believed to be at risk.

Inter, together with city rivals AC Milan, are being investigated for alleged false accounting between 2003 and 2005.

The Milan giants are suspected of inflating the values of second-string players traded between them for capital gains tax purposes to improve their annual accounts, falsely showing the clubs to be in a better financial position.

Inter are not expected to be stripped of their 2005-06 title - awarded to them after Juventus and AC Milan were punished for match-fixing - or deducted points if found guilty of fraud as it would be considered an administrative crime and not a sporting offence under Italian law.

According to the Gazzetta dello Sport's website, Inter can expect a heavy fine if they did falsify their accounts.

COVISOC, the financial regulator for the Italian football federation (FIGC), said on Wednesday Inter would not have been registered to play in Serie A for the 2005-06 season had their accounts been presented accurately.

"If the club had not declared fictitious capital gains, Inter would not have met the financial parameters required to register for 2005-06," a COVISOC spokesman told Italian news agency ANSA.

Inter refuted the claims, saying their books were in order.

"We are not worried about the investigation into our accounts," said Inter owner Massimo Moratti.

"All that is missing is our evidence that will clear this up once and for all."

Moratti admitted the valuations of players can change dramatically.

"I'm careful not to make mistakes, but it's true that the value of players in this market can be difficult to understand," he said.

"A player worth five million euros today can be worth 12 million euros or even nothing within a month."

Each summer every professional club in Italy is required to present audited accounts to COVISOC. A club can only take part in its relative championship once it has proved its accounts are in order and that it has financial cover to meet the following season's expenses.

Inter were also crowned champions last season, this time winning the Scudetto on the pitch rather than in the courts.
