question (concern for my videocard)

so it has happened maybe 4 times in the past 2 months...

im playing and then my computer goes blank. like the connection to the monitor is lost (this is after playing for a long time)

is there a way to find out if my card is overheating? like a program that will warn me? or is it just a random problem and i should not worry?

there are a bunch of heat monitoring systems. sorry but cant remember the name of the one that i use. if it really is a vid card problem, you should see evidence of overheating occuring BEFORE it goes into total shutdown, such as graphical artifacts and other weirdness.

is it just the monitor that goes blank, or does it crash the whole system?

tbh, i have never had problems with overheating of any component unless it was overclocked. might just be time for a new vid card

Download Rivatuner.

It won't warn you, but it will display your video card temps over time in a chart.

Start Rivatuner, then start up one of your 3D games and play through a graphically intense part. Exit the game and look what the temperature was during the play time.

If the card is too hot, I recommend popping the side off your computer case and pointing a little 2 inch fan inside. This worked for me.

so if its heat, i should see distortion and what not? ya i dont see anything, my monitor just goes as if my computer was off. sometimes the game randomly just shuts down as well... this happens about once a week

the incident where the whole thing goes black has happened only 4 times.

The game may slow down and start chugging if its getting too hot. shutting down is a symptom too.

If you have an Nvidia card you can look at the temperature through the latest control panel. What card is it?

Make sure u are using the latest drivers too, that could also be the culprit.
