Geeks: Mac Book noob question(s)

I just bought a mac book and am trying to wrap my head around simple things. I've been told that when you can't figure out something, it's because you're used to doing it the difficult windows way.

Some questions:

- why won't safari take up the whole screen when I maximize it using the button at the top left of the screen?
- is it possible to create a shortcut that deletes entire words at a time instead of individual letters/characters?
- how can I import the organization that I have on my other installations of MSN messenger, or is that not possible?
- What is the best way to connect this laptop to my other laptop to transfer files? I have an 80gb ipod, would that work (well)?

I'm sure I will have more questions but some help with the above would be a good starting point and very much appreciated!

I've had a mackbook for about 6 months now...and can't really answer those questions for you haha...

1. Dunno how to do that, its the same w/ firefox, i can't automatically maximize it, I have to do it manually

2. No idea, i just highlight stuff and delete...or select things using function

3. Is there an option to export/import contact lists which should import the organization

4. That is one way i guess, external HDD? USB? If you have bluetooth on your other computer you can transfer via Bluetooth

It should, you just have to figure out what button it is since they're backwards to how a windows machine works. Part of the mac interface though is not to use full-size windows since you have expose. It's just something you need to get used to but I find it much more useful in the long-run.

Click 3x over a word and it'll select the entire word for you.

This I'm not sure about as I don't actually have a mac in front of me and I know that mac MSN is shit. I'd recommend using Adium for your messenger needs

I would recommend using the iPod or an external hard drive if you're not used to any networking to send files that way. If you think you can, just network the two computers together via your router and share the files that way (you can find instructions online to do this, it's not too difficult).

Hope that helps.

Hahah.

Sarah, Sarah, get with the program! This isn't Windows here, where all of the UI problems are Microsoft's fault. If something is hard to do on a Mac, it just means you're not supposed to be doing it! Who selects text with a keyboard anyway?

(Actually, for that one item I believe there is a shortcut. On Windows its Ctrl+Shift+Arrow to select a word, I think on the Mac it's Option+Shift+Arrow. For the others - good luck!)

I had a macbook for three weeks, and that was the most annoying thing ever!!!!! you just can't take the whole screen without draggin it yourself!

and no delete key, just a backspace!!

some many quirks and irks that made me return the whole thing.

and don't get me started about the whole "mac is more stable" ... just a myth.

Microsoft Messenger:Mac BLOWS. Nowhere near as good as the PC version.

no you don't..i have mine set, where if i have two fingers, touching the pad and click..itll be the right click.

1 Finger + click = Left click
2 Figers + click = Right click

Same for scrolling,

1 Finger = Move Mouse
2 Fingers = Scroll

Nice. Thanks! The mouse still rules tho. Can't imagine computer life without it.

Ever heard of Force Quit?

Honestly the problems I have with a PC are completely avoided when using a Mac. As for productivity and integration with audio production + graphic design, there is nothing like using a Mac.

I'm not even a Mac fan-boy as I still work for Microsoft, but I do prefer the usability features in a Mac to a PC, hands down.
