I need jazz

I've always liked jazz, but for some reason I've never really gotten 'into' it. I hear stuff I like all the time but I couldn't even name you five jazz bands without doing research. So I was hoping the music conaisseurs of TA might have some recommendations

I like soft jazz. Nothing too happy or too upbeat. Preferably no pianos or trumpets - but I love guitars and screaming saxophones. I particularly like soft acid jazz (or what i think is acid jazz); slow groovy beats that sound like dub or downtempo electronica. Relatively beatless stuff is nice too, as long as it's soft and relaxing.

I mostly listen to this local jazz radio station, but unfortunately they never give out any names so I don't know what I'm listening to. I managed to record a bit of a track a few nights ago off my mp3 player (so sorry if the sound quality is bad). This is an example of what I'm looking for;

It was about 1 in the morning and it was pretty chilly out (about 15 degrees). I just got out of the train and waited for the bus in the middle of nowhere, with a pitch black forest behind me and a quiet river in front. Lit a cigar and heard this beauty - it just fit the moment so perfectly.

Buddy Guy and then use last.fm to find similar artists to Buddy Guy, and so on. You'll get some good shit that way.

Nope, got plenty of that already. What I'm looking for is sort of in the same spirit, but much softer, more dub and downtempo like, not dance music.

I don't have a ton of time to get into exactly why I like the following albums, but I know we have somewhat similar tastes in music, so these are some of my all time favorites that I hope you'll dig:

Medeski, Martin, and Wood - "The Dropper," "End of the World Party (Just in Case)" & "Combustication"

The Dropper is a bit more traditional, Combustication is a little bit more modern, and End of the World party is heavily electronic influenced.

Miles Davis - "Kind of Blue"

Flamenco Sketches is an all time favorite - most relaxing song I've ever heard.

Sarah Vaughan - Any Compilation of hers that has her version of "Summertime" on it. Absolutely brilliant, my all time favorite female vocalist.

John Scofield - "A Go Go" and "Uberjam"

A Go Go is a CD by scofield accompanied by MMW, very chill and groovy - Uberjam is a Scofield and friends CD that is absolutely unreal.

Brad Mehldau - "Largo"

Brilliant Jazz pianist, this CD has been one of my favorites for the past few years. His cover of "Paranoid Android" is amazing.

Soulive - "Turn it Out" and "Soulive"

Another favorite modern jazzz trio, "Soulive" is one of the best live albums I've ever heard.

And finally - it doesn't matter what it is, but you absolutely have to have anything that Charlie Hunter has ever done. My all time favorite Jazz guitarist, he basically created the instrument he plays (a combination Bass/Guitar). Unbelievable performer!

Hope that helps, and really hope you find at least something in there that you like!

Cheers

If you want to start with something somewhere between electronica and jazz, I recommend the MMW CD "End of the World Party (Just in Case)," but otherwise most of the stuff I listed above spans a pretty wide variety of jazz.

Keep me posted on what you find that you like, and I can try to help narrow down some other recommendations

I like jazz too, but out of all music i like it's probably the one i like the least (comparatively), so i've never had time to dig deeper into it. However i've checked out quite a lot of stuff by John Coltrane and Miles Davis, two obvious "big ones", good stuff. Also i tend to prefer smoother relaxed jazz with a soulful kinda romantic vibe, in contrast to the more insane virtuoso atonal mayhem style.

@RJT

I have the transcription of cannonball's alto solo on Flamenco Sketches (also for so what) and it's fun as hell to play on alto.

beautiful track

I liked most of the stuff you wrote, particularly MMW (some of their work reminds me of early 70s prog rock), although it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. I wasn't sure how to describe it when I wrote my initial post, but after going through your recommendations, I think what I'm looking for is something more 'spacey', possibly slower too. Guitars, but not like funky electric guitars - more like soft plucks echoed over an atmospheric background. The sample I put up pretty much sums it up, but it doesn't have to be upbeat.

It was good though, I think I'm gonna save a few of those for my 'to buy' list.
