(how's that for pressure?) |
Oh the pressure!
Well the excitement started at 7:30pm when my buddy who had originally wanted to go had a bit of a crisis and had to cancel on me... So I madly scrambled to get my address book out and made my way down the list. The response overwhelmingly was "Who's Billy Idol", or "ewww". Really people, I could possibly understand not liking his music, but unless you've been living under a rock all your life, there is no excuse to the who question.
Anyway, grabbed a local buddy and departed for the Kool Haus. Arrived around 8:20pm to a huge line along Queens Quay and wrapping around going up Jarvis. Luckily once the doors opened the flow of people into the Kool Haus was pretty steady. Security was lax; pretty much just patting my left hip then waiving me in. Seems to be the case for most rock concerts I've been too. Makes it that much easier to bring your wheel barrel full of weed into the club!
Music started at 9pm sharp seeing blond hair dash across a dark stage into the spotlight. I was closer to the back, but still noticed the extreme loudness of the sound system. I suppose all those old skool rockers are pretty deaf by now and needed the volume boost. Normally the Kool Haus sound system is not usually cranked that high, but in retrospect I should have brought ear plugs in case I needed em.
All the usual Billy Idol classics could be heard including:
Dancing With Myself
White Wedding
Rebel Yell
Flesh for Fantasy
Sweet Sixteen (the chicks went crazy for this one!)
He also did some stuff off his new album Devil's Playground.
There was a tall 6'5 guy with poofy hair that decided he would do jumping jacks to White Wedding in front of us!!
As I mentioned earlier, Goth chicks are really really nice friendly people. Chatted a couple of em up that night.
Crowd was very mixed. From teens to 50yr old business men still wearing their suits! And a rock concert would not be a rock concert unless you saw weed smoke ascend from the crowd through the beam of a spotlight. You never really need to bring your own, just inhale the air, or ask your friendly neighborhood Goth chick for a toke off hers...
And a friendly tip: move to the exits hastily when you sense that last song coming on. If you don't, prepare yourself to be squished into a tight bottleneck for quite some time.
The concert finished about 11pm. My buddy and I walked to a pub on Front St. E. called the Jersey Giant. Grabbed a pint of Guinness and some burgers, and then made our way back home.
All in all it was an enjoyable night. Can't wait to see Garbage play there on the 25th!
