How to mix with filters???

Hey guys... been wondering this for a while, and after last week opening for Funkagenda, i noticed him mixing with the filters on the djm 800. Ive also seen desyn masiello do this with a xone 62 / 92.

How do you actually do it... hard to learn, any videos on it etc etc.. any help would be great, cheers

use a high pass filter the same way you would gaining the lows so the low ends don't clash. you have the added benefit then of being able to create a suspended zone where both filters are up before you drop it

not too hard to figure out

whenever i've used a mixer with filters it's tantalizing to mix with them like this, but since the sound is so characterstic (unless done very subtlely) i try to avoid it because it becomes cliche. it's great used a few times in the perfect places

I do it all the time because I don't like to use the EQs much. Basically I just run a high pass to slowly take the song out starting with the lows. High pass means it cuts the lows out and lets the highs through. Sweep the frequency slowly to take out the whole song.

Morillo mixes on the filters too.... using the vermona/stanton action filters - they are part of his rider and he is all over them.
Works on the same principal as the bass eq. Also means you can go right through the frequency range with no steps or gaps unlike when using the eq.
Can be very smooth if you know how.

It only tends to sound overused if you turn the resonance up...thats when it can sound squelchy, If you back off the resonance, you can use it all night long and it will just sound very good.

A part of the contract stipulating what equipment the DJ will need for the night.

I use a combination of filters and EQs during transitions. Very handy.

I do this as well every now and then, all though I don't really like the filter "slider" on the Xone 32 as opposed to the knobs on the 92 and 62.

My last gig with the 92 I actually ended up mixing with filters accidentally twice, as I'd bring in a tune, drop the bass knob in only to find no bass. Then I noticed I had left the HP filter on at 12 o'clock. lol

Bang on!!

I mix with the filters on my 92 all the time and if I want a subtle mix, I just turn the Resonance down to around 12 oclock.

I've also started to mix the tracks together using the Low Pass Filters and you can really get a smooth deep mix using them, but only on the right tracks.

yea as long as you can adjust the resonance down mixing using filters is a no-brainer. this is probably the only thing i do not like about the djm800, the dedicated filter has a standard level of resonance that is not adjustable.

I can't believe on an £1100 mixer, you can't adjust the resonance on the filters.
