I have been looking around at tb 303 clones virtual and hardware and not many seem to come close to giving a good screaming acid lead while still giving a crispy clean bass.

I have found one very useful web page here but who else knows of some well priced 303 clones (preferably vsti).

It seems that many may hate the 303 sound because of its over use or whatnot but that is not what this thread is about so don't try start another unneeded argument.

i like the mc-303... especially because of the bass boost knob on the back of the box. these things can be found cheap, and they have a lot of other sounds too.

the 303 patch in the asr-x pro is good. -more than anything, i love the character and sound quality of the asr-x pro. -that's why i've been a proud asr-x pro owner for about 10 years now.

the mc-909's stock 303 patches are good too. probably cleaner than the old mc-303, but the 909 doesn't have the bass boost knob. -i haven't A-B'ed them yet. i haven't messed w/the 303 patches on the srx cards yet.

for software... the 303 patches on the vintage synth collection that's available for the emulator x/proteus x is pretty good. use in conjuction w/the e-mu filters... oh lordy!

the only vst i know of w/303 patches, is the roland groove synth that comes w/the producer edition of sonar 6. not bad, but the daw thing didn't work out for me, so i threw it way.

Also try messing with these and some waveshaping or distortion, it can really help it to get that squelchy sound.

You aren't going to get much closer than these without just getting the real thing.

I have been playing with both Audiorealism Bassline and Phoscyon demos Phoscyon already seems to be giving me more flexibility whilst Bassline seems to have a tad more scream in it.
It is hard to decide but I think I may end up going with Phoscyon. Some more knob tweaking with the demo's is required before I make up my mind hehe.

FAT freebass fb383 or MAM MB-33 mk1 (same internally)

Problem solved- cheap as chips, tiny rackmount, and exceptionally good. I have three!
External filter input is a bonus too.....

Two questions about the fb383 and the MB-33 mk1.
Is everything controllable from the midi in?
Where can I find one?

I tried google, found a few sites audio examples and reviews but not even any links to where I could get further info.

Turnkey Audio in the UK worked with MAM to create the F.A.T brand (Freeform Analog Technologies for the geeks who want to know). They made simple rack tools like the 303 clone, a standalone analog filter and also a vocoder. I think they made a few other things but I can't seem to find any more info on the F.A.T brand any more.

Turnkey did work with MAM to make the FAT range but they were discontinued at least 4 years ago. It might be worth asking if they have any demo stock around, but I doubt it. You're going to need to look for 2nd hand.......

midi does note on, note off, and accent. Nothing more. Just as it should be. If you are looking for something fully automated, then look elsewhere. It is authentic to the original in that way too.
You set the midi receive channel using dip switches on the back.

ebay is your best bet- do not go anywhere near turnkey- bunch of tossers, and they havent sold them for years anyway. They went out of production around 6 ago.

The FAT resinator filter rack is insane too.

My favorite 303 hardware clones (coz' software won't do)

If you're on a budget: Roland MC-09 - can be had for $100 - $200, EXCELLENT and quite believable replacement. Programming is a bitch but it has sampling option (slow as sh!t).

if you got some loot and patience - acidlab bassline (around $700) - veeeeeeery good analog clone. Check out acidlab.de website for demos

and finally...

Future Retro 777 - more than a 303 clone.. Expensive, can fetch as much as $1500 but you can probably find out for around $900 if you're lucky/patient.

Seeing that original 303 can sell for UNBELIEVABLE $3000!!!!!! I'd say the market is still as hot as ever for 303. And truth be told, nothing makes the crowd jump more than a well-programmed 303 scream.

Wow, can't believe there's no mention of Audiorealism on that page. It's definitely one of the better 303 clones.

Keep in mind that real 303s don't necessarily produce real fat bass or screaming acid leads, any more so than a real 909 produces deep punchy kicks. They have to be processed quite a bit in order to be suitable for production-quality tunes.
