JP-8080 in Cubase SX2 - Please help

Hi
Just got a JP8080 and trying to get Cubase SX2 to trigger it by MIDI without the other instruments playing.
All of the other instruments I use are VST - this is the only hardware I have. I don't have a MIDI interface, but instead I'm using the M-Audio Keystation Pro88 as a controller and a MIDI thru device (controller connected to computer by USB, JP8080 connected to controller by MIDI cable).

The problem is that the JP8080 sounds fine when I have it selected in the Cubase track window, but when I select a different instrument, the JP still plays on top of the other instrument.
Is there a way to isolate the JP8080 so that it doesn't play when I am editing the VST instruments? I've tried setting the MIDI channel on the JP8080 to an unused channel, but then I get no sound at all. I've also tried setting the controller to "MIDI out from USB" and then the JP flashes "MIDI disconnected".

Do I need to get a MIDI hub to make all of this work?

On the JP.

Press EDIT, then MIDI until Local Switch appears on the display. Then press Inc to turn it off.

hmm...unfortunately that didn't seem to do the trick. Once I turned off the local switch the sound is gone altogether.

I do have the midi channel set to 1 in Cubase, but now i'm wondering what would should the output of the Cubase midi track be set to? Since the JP is connected to my midi keyboard should I select the keyboard as the output in Cubase?

I really appreciate any help on this, guys...

Local control would should turn off "control panel -> internal synth engine" on the JP; but should still allow external triggering. Shouldn't be required for what you want.

Your problem is more then likely that your midi thru device is doing what it supposed to, passing the midi data thru to the JP.

In Cubase, try this:

a) File -> Preferences
b) Find the "Midi" page.
c) Untick "Midi Thru Active"
d) Report back

Failing all that, see the "Volume" knob in the bottom left corner of the JP?

ok, i unticked the "midi thru active" in pref erences...still no dice. In fact doing that turned off all of my VSTs sounds as well...

Perhaps the problem is that my midi controller cannot act as a midi interface? any thoughts?

the volume knob is up btw =)

There is that potential.

What is it? Does it only have one midi out port?

Connect your interface to the MIDI IN/OUT of the JP. And your controller to REMOTE KBD IN.

Yes. MIDI controller should be set to REMOTE KBD IN on the 8080. I just wish it was the same on the Virus
