I just listened to "Through the Fractal". It's experimental electronica to me that is trying to be EDM of the psy persuasion. It's got some bad production problems, and the samples sound very flat, but again, I see what you are trying to do. THe kick is one of the Must-changes, but it's got some terrible samples for percussion.

You've got a clap sample that must go, it sounds like a 909 throwaway that was in the fruityloops folders somewhere (not saying that's what you are using).

Otherwise, you've got some interesting synths there. THey are fairly generic, but they otherwise need some work in the upper frequencies with their resonnance.

Keep it up.

And what are the "bad production problems"? The kick is an actual kick drum, not synth kick used in most trance. And all the other samples exept the clap are real samples also, off of deepest india CD, which is hardly considered terrible. The clap is exactly that, a 909. And yes, i got it from a fruityloops folder. I did it on purpose. As i was not produceing trance really, so i didn't descide to stick to the standards of that.

BTW, the only percussion is a kick a hat tap and a clap. No snare or anything else. Just those 3. At first, i was only going to have a kick and tap, but i opted for a classic 909 clap. Who cares if its from the late 80's lol.

Where do you get expriemental electronic and EDM from?

What about the synths do you think is generic?

The resonace is the way it is, on purpose. If i wasn't tired of hearing the song, i would probably add even more resonace.

The more resonace done correctly, the better.

I apologize if I sounded harsh with a scatterbrained breivity.

Well, for starters a "realistic" sounding kick drum from an acoustic drumkit is very rarely a solution to a 4-on-the-floor. An acoustic kick drum has a more "fleshy" crumble of an attack that doesn't match the appropriate timbre of a trance-inspired tune. The other problem with an acoustic drum in an EDM (electronic dance music) track is the tail of the kick. An acoustic drum has a very short tail that simply has a differentl grainy timbre than a kick that you should have used. Basically, because this sounds so much like psy, it would have been better to use a kick with a high pitched attack and bassy decay that is prominent in the genre. If you weren't trying to produce trance, then why does this sound like goa/psy-trance with unusual samples filling in the pattern.

Your tune was labled as trance, has elements of psy trance, but it also has elements of EDM that make it experimental (such as the useage of acoustic drums for conventional synth drums).

There is NOTHING wrong with resonance on a synth... it's when the highs are a tad overbearing on the frequency when the Q is hitting that significant pitch... perhaps you could multiband them or EQ them to tame them.

Generic, you ask? Well, the pads do not sound so generic, but the resonance synth sounds like a crossover acid/saw lead that I've heard in tracks like this before. The saw lead sounds a tad like something that could easily be recreated on a 3xOSC, so hense my hasty judgement.

The clap just sounds cheap, that's all I can say. I think it should go. Others may or may not agree with me, but having that sample in my FL folder screams "cheap". It's just that my harshest critiques are reserved for the clap and kick drum samples used in this track.

Asides from the production problems I see what you are trying to do... my favorite part of the track is the breakdown with the double-attack synth.

If you want me to clarify anything else, I can't promise I'm always gonna be free to expound and re-review my comments because I'm working alot these weeks and I'll be out of town this weekend.

Yes, i see what yhour saying, though, about the kick drum, get ready for more, my next track is going to have the same kind of perc line as in my track Goa India [several diffrent drums, and a hat or two] very boomy and ethnic like.

Honestly, i rarely use clap, because well, i think its a pretty pointless percussion sound. My adding it in was kinda strange i guess. And the sample chosen aswell.

I also see what you mean with the reso synth, yeah its pretty common i guess. A problem i face is i try to design sounds from scratch, and i successeed, but then after while, i decide i wnat a diffrent sound for this or that lead, so i develop a new one, the thing is, each time i revamp the sound [which happens about 5-6 times per track] it seems to get more useual and common. Which i believe is due 99% to the fact that i think the sound i had before was too strange or cheezy or what-ever-it-sounds-like-that-the-majority-of-people-would-think-sucks...lol

A big problem i had [and still have kinda] is hearing other sounds and saying wow i want that, and trying to produce that. When that happens, my track useualy goes down hill and sits on my HD collecting dust because i can't find an end to it...because i allowed myself to copy-cat. Though, when i actually make all the sounds myself, i advance through the production process without that many bumps. Though, as seen, some sounds may actually turn otu very common....but all i can say is..when i actually discovered each of the sounds in my track, at the time, i was like WOW WTF PWNT...all the sounds were uber.

My next track will be ambienty, with a bit more goa elements, and i will do another ethnic drumline again, sence kick snare kick snare is vastly overused.
