This is probably more at home in the production forum, but...

Unfortunately the waves plugins can only be bought in bundles - the cheapest one including the L2 is the Masters bundle which comes in at £640!

There is the L1 Ultramaximiser though, which can be bought as part of the Power Pack bundle for about £300, which does pretty much the same job.

You do know you can make your own limiter out of most compressor plugins? A lot have even got built in limiters, but even if they haven't you can just set the compression ratio really high, give it a short attack and decay and you have yourself a limiter. Granted it doesn't amplify the signal like the Ultramaximiser does, but you can do that yourself with an input level before the limiter.

Not true. Waves offers some of the plug-ins for sale a la cart.

The L1 and L3 are available for purchase individually... i'd say go for the L3, its far more intelligent.

L3 is twice the price of L1 though - you could get the Power Pack for less than the price of the L3 alone, which gets you the L1 with a load of other plugins, although I agree if it is literally just a limiter you're after and you're willing to spend that much you'll be better off with the L3.

Right... I won't argue that the bundles are a much better value.

Another thing to add... the bundle prices on waves.com are far more expensive than the prices available from dealers. I don't know about your countries, but I can get much better prices from Sweetwater Sound (a dealer) than directly through Waves themselves. this applies to upgrades as well.

PS: I f*ing hate airlines. Been at the airport since 5 and, as of right now, my flight is scheduled to take off at 11:45. F*ing ridiculous.

hey chris, sorry to hear about your flight troubles (i had some delays yesterday flying from ft lauderdale to atlanta... summer thunderstorms ). anyway, l2 was recommended to me by a good producer who said that was the best plug-in to clean up my vinyl rips before i converted them to mp3. if he's recommending it, and it costs such a boatload, i'm gonna think he's pretty correct and i'll assume it's pretty darn good at what it does... no?

The Ultramaximizer is a rock-solid tool, no doubt. For ripping vinyl, I have found Adobe Audition to be great. It has a few audio processing features like pop/click remover that are great for ripping vinyl. (Although, that one is pretty pricy too.) If you want, you're more than welcome to come over to my place and try out Audition before spending the cash.

Get the L3. Even more resolution than the L2.

What exactly is it that you want to clean up?
A limiter won't clean up anything, but raise the loudness at a cost that it'll squash your music.
The vinyls you have are most likely already mastered (including a limiter at very end of the chain) before pressing it all.
If you run it through another limiter again you'll lose all the dynamics that are left. End result: flat lifeless wave that looks like a square.

I am sure he just wants the dithering algorithm that comes with the L1 L2 and L3 limiters.

To do what exactly? I see no use for dithering in this situation unless for example he wants to go from his 24bits wav recording to 16bit and then converting that to mp3. Don't think the benefits of that are any better than just converting the original recording directly to mp3. If he just uses good equipment, the recording should be clean enough.
