Recording with Vista

I never had a problem with XP. Now I have Vista along with total recorder which I used with XP but it wont let me record now. I can't record from the internet or any other comp. program or through my mixer. On the back of the computer i have six jacks on it. its the basic card that came with the comp. i dont know what the symbols stand for and the instructions do not clarify; but the colors are black, orange, green. white, pink, blue.

I wrote to high criteria t support thinking it may be total recorder but its the operating system. i was told to turn on my wave out mix line but i dont have one in my sound options. i only i have mic rear mic and line in.

Any help would be greaaaaaatly appreciated cause ive been trying to solve this problem for weeks now and i still cant.

In the windows mixer make sure to select the line in channel.
On the back of the computer the blue plug should be the line in.

Dude, please (and this goes for anyone posting about "my xxxx does not work since installing vista...") do a search!

You will see that nearly every similar thread ends with the words Vista is not ready for DAW's or music production. It will be about 9 months to a year before everything is sorted for it to be reliable.

There are exceptions of people getting it to work, but on the wole it's not a good idea right now.

SP2 MEANING SERVICE PACK 2? Vista really does suck, its not compatible with most software, a bunch of DLA problems windows media player buffers everytime at the end of a song, its just terrible.

yeah, Operating systems are fun like that. Vista however is the shittiest thing i've seen from MS since ME. Hell Mac even had the same problem when it went to 10.4 and it took most software companies at least 6 months to make their shit compatible.

Vista has some stuff that is designed to prevent people from doing illegal copying of media. Have heard of many situations involving video. Maybe it restricts audio too.

On other audio forums it is recommended to stay away from Vista until the restriction issues are sorted out.

Yup, stay away from Vista, being a PC geek it's pretty bad right now.

Driver support for hardware is very pre-mature and lacking (look at nvidia and ati for example)

I would agree Vista is a bloody POS. Biggest memory-hogging mac-wannabe junk MS has put out yet... In beta stages it was almost unbearable, testing it was a real chore and basically every 3rd party driver required MAJOR updates to run.

For what benefit, I don't know, unless you just enjoy having your RAM and hard drive space wasted.. \WINDOWS is 5+ GB! wtf?

However, I have yet to use it with an ASIO-compatible soundboard... I refuse to install it on my DAW.

Anyone had any luck with it using ASIO sound interfaces, which should bypass the windows audio subsystem?

The problem with this situation is that MS has tried to make a competitor (in Vista) to ASIO which they have called Wave RT. Technically, Wave RT would provide lower latencies but it requires that both the hardware driver is Wave RT and the software (sequencer, etc.) has Wave RT built in. I can't really see Steinberg (who developed ASIO) falling over themselves to include a MS component in to their software.

The other issue is that Wave RT would actually require more processing power to do the same job (albeit with marginally less latency) than ASIO.

There really should be a sticky warning people not to use vista yet.

Ugh. I hadn't heard about Wave RT. Sounds terrible.

Microsoft's DRM crap has got out of hand... It's so pointless, not to mention so easily defeated. Considering you can still find the newest mainstream releases on the P2P nets before they hit the stores, it obviously isn't working.
