I have been trying to produce tracks for years now and i still feel like i am missing something.. What really brings out the progression in your songs or tracks. I know this is a broad question i am asking , but i am just trying to get some more inspiration or ideas from you. Anyway. I am using Logic Pro 5 PC. and i never am satisfied with my tracks because i feel it lacks something that could really help it. What do you use to really keep your tracks moving well and not get repetitive? i guess. Is it more Percussion? Bass? Kick? Pad? Fx? obviously all of them , but which one is really focused on to help out.

It might be easier to help you if you posted a sample.

I will post a sample of my latest track. But i feel as if they all lack something. I feel sometimes there is empty space. Even when i just have a Standard Kick Clap Hi Hat Beat. And some tracks i hear that just have those elements already sound somewhat tight and full. Is it certain Reverb Effects or some sort of Compression side chaining.. I mean maybe its my percussion.. I don't know..

I found that some of my tracks were like this, I think maybe what you need (without hearing anything) is to just throw in more melodies/ elements. Most trance has at least 2 different sections, many tracks have more, but its important to make sure that the sections are completely different to each other, but just keep enough resemblence to make them cohesive. Drop elements in and out and your set.

I realised this after listening to underworld tracks, they have a 12 minute tracks and they never get boring IMO, because they have so many different elements and melodies which all sound brilliant together.

So yeah, essentially write 3 or more different tracks, lay them out in sequence, mesh them together, drop elements of each track in and out and your good.

For this concept, one of the best things I have found is to listen to some classical music. Classical composers are EXCELLENT at manipulating emotions and energy and they are utilizing tons of instruments to accomplish this. Now, I'm not saying that you're going to use this to write the next great symphony, but you can see how different instruments come together to create the mood, which itself will change several times thoughout the performance.

I totally understand what you are saying.. Its all together. but I maybe think it could be a good bass pattern to help it out or maybe the right sound to really fatten it up a little.

you need to layer the melodies, keep the drums flowing with grace notes. a good bassline is a always a key part in keeping a songs drive. i agree with the comment about different sections to your productions. most trnce tracks have several parts to them.

just listen to other songs, experiment with your own, and most importantly:

USE YOUR EARS! - best advice you can give anyone for production! dont forget to use them amongst all the technology!

and when you learn to do this you become a pro...its all about trial and error...and lots of practice. It sucks the big one that it takes time but hey maybe you are lucky and it wont take you that long. For some it takes years and other only months.
