Random question

So my gf and I are looking at moving to a new place really soon with the options of living on the 1st (bottom) or 3rd (top) floors.

I know you can hear people on top of you, but can you hear people on the bottom of you as well?

Does bass travel up through walls/floors?

yes, however since your speakers are usually sitting on the floor the vibrations get transferred more through the floor than the ceiling -- so bass below will be louder than bass above.

If you live on the first floor you have to deal with the people above you making noise, but your noise won't bother anyone. If you live on the third floor you won't have to deal with anyone's noise, but your neighbors will have to deal with yours.

Live on the top floor then make noise and when they complain tell them to fuck off. Works for me.

What a trip! This morning I drove by some apartments that have 3 stories and I randomly asked myself that question! hahahaha...
Living on the 1st floor gives you the opportunity to hear all the footsteps of those above you. I'm assuming the middle floor get the full advantage of those above and some noise from below. Living on the last floor up above would only give you sounds that travel through the walls, like a head-board banging the wall and bass from music below. You might also get complaints from those below you cuz you're making too much noise.
Another thing is if you have plumbing problems... ummm, good luck!

It really depends on what the floors/walls are made of.

Last place I lived in the floors, under the carpet, were thick congrete and so where the walls between apartments....and the windows/doors were double-pane. The apartment was basically sound proof from all sides. I miss being able to blast my music there, lol.

i live on 3rd floor and rarely hear noise from the bottom unless theyre screaming or really banging music with heavy bass which is rarely. on the other hand, i blast my KRK RP5 but i guess i have great neighbors cause they never complain. i always have the thought behind my head of them complaining so i try to be careful. i always stop it at 10pm though. i can tell u this much, when i have the music on, the wall is definetely vibrating lol.

pick the 3d floor, i wouldnt stand people walking over me. trust me u can feel footsteps easily in most buildings.

man i wish I could turn my speakers up. I live on the second floor and in between neighbors. They usually bang on the wall when I have it too high lol sucks.

Oh, another example of how material is important.

The place I just moved from (the place with all the concrete is where I lived before that) obviously originally had wooden floor, at least in the apartment below us. And they put carpet over it.

They had a little child (3yrs old I'd say?) and whenever he walked/ran fast across the apartment you'd swear a 500lb man was running across the roof. You'd hear a big BOOM BOOM BOOM with every step throughout the entire apartment. It was annoying.

Damn't, I'm living with that now! I'm in the middle floor of a 3 story apartment complex. I think upstairs was unoccupied for awhile, because just recently I've been hearing that 3 year old running back and forth around the apartment!!! He runs from the front door to the balcony, back and forth, all day--no lie!!

And the walls that separate the apartments are concrete, but that doesn't do anything about the sound. I can easily hear the baby next door crying. Or when my neighbor is yelling at her husband; her super high pitched voice travels through the concrete with ease. At least I only have one neighbor on the side.

Sound travels on most apartment complexes in California. There's really no apartment that's sound proof here. I used to live on a perfect corner unit directly above Starbucks. We had concrete floors so starbucks didn't really care. They also had music playing when they were open and I could not hear it. Unfortunately, my only neighbor which I share a common wall was an Ass. He made numerous complaints to the manager who in return gave me warnings. 2 days before the last month of my lease, the manager sent me a 30 day notice telling me that they did not want to renew my lease

They key to not having complaints is having cool neighbors and the key to having a great house party is having it at someone else's place
