Man shot dead by police officer in Santa Barbara during Fiesta

One Dead in Officer Involved Shooting in Santa Barbara
Breaking News: Shooting Witnessed by Dozens of People
An officer involved shooting leaves one man dead on State Street in the downtown Santa Barbara nightclub district. Police Lieutenant Paul McCaffrey says the shooting is under investigation. He did not say why the man was shot. The incident occurred at 11:50 pm on State near Ortega Streets. The identity of the victim is not known.
Hundreds of people were in the area, where several crowded bars and restaurants are located.
Witnesses told KEY News Senior Reporter John Palminteri on the scene, multiple shots were fired.
A customer at the Tonic nightclub, George Casique says he saw many people dive to the ground when the gunshots rang out. Casique says several officers had their weapons out, but he did not know if more than one officer fired the shots.
Taxi driver Brian Gray, was parked at the shooting scene. He said one bullet hit his vehicle, and blew out a tire.
The street was sealed off by police who detained dozens of witnesses. Police Chief Cam Sanchez was on the scene but has not made a statement.
The shooting took place as Santa Barbara was celebrating it's annual Old Spanish Days Fiesta. Earlier in the day a parade on State St. drew thousands of people.
Many extra officers, were assigned to the downtown area at the time to help with crowd control.

If a stray bullet hit an occupied vehicle then you had better believe someone is going to lose their job unless the suspect was firing his gun at innocent people. The officers should have taken cover and waited till the suspect left the crowded area before opening fire. Even when an officer's life is threatened they are still responsible and liable for every single bullet they fire. Only about 30% of the shots fired will hit the intended target in most situations, luckily the other 70% didn't end up in Curly's face.

alright so apparently the dude was in the Navy stationed in Port Hueneme. 24 years old. Previously had some beef with another guy that slept with his wife or something. They randomly ran into each other on State Street here in Santa Barbara for Fiesta and a fight broke out. Cops rushed to the scene to break up the fight and just then homeboy pulls out a gun and the cops immediately opened fire and dropped that fool. Now the other guy is free to sleep with the dude's wife stress free. Shady shit. So then the cops searched the dude's friend's car and found another gun. Both guns were loaded! Savage. I'm going out downtown tonight with my bullet proof vest. This breaking news brought to you by Savage News.

dude it happened right out in front of the club I am a resident at now. Luckily I was out of town for a DJ gig. Remember what I said about my fear of being in public and getting stabbed/shot randomly. That would have sucked if I got hit by a stray bullet just days after posting in that thread. LOL.

Press Release from the club next to where the shooting happened (I am a resident here now):

To Tonic patrons & friends-

Last night at approximately 11:50pm, there was a shooting incident involving the Santa Barbara Police Department in front of Hamburger Habit and Urban Outfitters on the 600 block of State Street which left 1 person killed, Wilfred Turner of Oxnard. Police say Turner and two of his Oxnard friends encountered another group of men, including a 16-year-old female also from Oxnard. Authorities say Turner and one of the guys in the other group had fought before and had a history of “bad blood” between them over allegations the man was romantically involved with Turner’s wife.

The two men erupted into a fight, and others in the two groups also got involved. Santa Barbara police say two police officers tried to break up the fight and that’s when Turner pulled out a gun and pointed it at people. The two officers then pulled out their guns and fired several shots. Turner was struck and killed. Police recovered Turner’s gun and say it was loaded, and they also found a second handgun inside his friend’s truck, which he rode in. Turner recently served in the U.S. Navy stationed out of Port Hueneme.

The police were extremely quick to respond and sectioned off all of State Street in between the cross streets of Cota and Ortega. As the shots were heard by hundreds of people walking State Street and lining up to enter various clubs, people naturally scurried to find a safe haven, which included the front covering of Tonic. The natural and precautionary ripple effect of people hitting the ground amid the madness ended up-like a wave-reaching all the way to the patio of Tonic, as we quickly turned off our music and cooperated with a flurried effort by the police to secure the area. We apologize if these steps startled our patrons unnecessarily.

Our management and security teams took every step to ensure the safety of our patrons by adhering to what the police wanted us to do in those critical moments thereafter, and this included closing our front and back doors until they notified us that it was OK to let people leave. As the crime scene was located within the entertainment district, they sought to secure the outside of the club for evidence and witnesses before they welcomed an additional 500+ more people onto the streets.

We hope that you, our loyal patrons, continue to feel safe patronizing our establishment and see this extremely unfortunate situation for the anomaly that it was. Santa Barbara is almost always a safe destination, Fiesta weekend or otherwise. Our prayers go out to the family members of the involved parties.

Tonic Nightclub

Article from the SB Independent:

Police Release Details of State Street Shooting

Oxnard Resident Was Shot and Killed by Two Officers
Saturday, August 4, 2007
By Chris Meagher (Contact)

More details in the State Street shooting by two Santa Barbara police officers have been released. Police have identified the man killed by police as Wilfred A. Turner, 24, of Oxnard.

Turner had driven up with two male friends from Oxnard, parked in the Bank of America parking lot at 834 State Street, and walked downtown. Outside of the Habit restaurant, the group ran into another group of "at least three men" and a 16-year-old female who also were from Oxnard, according to police. Turner had disputes with a man in the other group over the man’s romantic involvement with Turner’s 20-year-old wife, Lt. Paul McCaffrey said. After exchanging words, the groups began to fight.

Meanwhile, two Santa Barbara police officers saw the commotion and were walking over to restore order when Turner allegedly pulled a .45 caliber automatic handgun from his cargo pants pocket and began pointing the gun at people. The two officers both drew their handguns and fired multiple rounds, hitting Turner, who died at the scene. Witnesses described hearing multiple shots — reports varied from five shots, to seven, to an entire "clip" — and a chaotic scene with people taking cover and ducking. "Every officer in De la Guerra Plaza was on the run," one witness said. Clubs, bars, restaurants, and all other businesses were almost immediately shut down, and patrons were forced to leave. McCaffrey wouldn’t say how many shots were fired. No one else was injured, but the front tire on the passenger side of cab driver Brian Gray’s taxi was hit by either a bullet or a fragment. His car had been parked right outside the Habit. "I saw a cop shooting," said Gray, who was inside his vehicle at the time. "I think he unloaded a clip."

Police brought numerous witnesses back to the station to determine what happened, and were investigating at the scene, with State Street closed between Ortega and Cota Streets, until about 9 a.m.

Police found the pick-up truck Turner arrived to Santa Barbara in, a Chevrolet — owned by Randall Leon Johnson, 23 — and found a second handgun inside the truck. Johnson was arrested for fighting in public and for possession of a concealed firearm in a vehicle. Two others, Mark Anthony Smith, 22, and Terence Ruben, 24, were arrested for fighting in public, although it isn’t clear if they were fighting with or against Turner. According to police, Turner and the other men he was with were stationed in Port Hueneme as servicemen in the U.S. Navy, but Turner left the service suddenly last June.

The two officers who fired the rounds have been placed on administrative leave, as is common practice in cases where officers fire shots. The District Attorney’s office will eventually be handed the investigation to determine the legality of using deadly force. The department also has a strict internal investigation protocol to ensure every action was appropriate for the situation.

McCaffrey said with the increased Fiesta crowd around and a man pointing a gun, police can’t dictate the situation. "Real life happens," he said. "They couldn’t help the circumstances. In this case no one else was shot or wounded."

what dates will you be up here? Unfortunately, all of Santa Barbara has shifted towards that stupid ass hiphop/rock mashup bullshit. Not so much house music left anymore. I will let you know if anything house music related will go on.
