Inside Daft Punk's pyramid / live CD announced

From the Urb Blog http://www.urb.com

Everybody's fave robots, Daft Punk, have announced a live CD to be released in Novemeber, according to Billboard. The CD will feature the groups performance in Paris on June, 14, 2007, an interesting choice considering that a recording of that particular night is already all over the P2P. The release will come as a single CD, or a double CD which will include the show's encore. No word yet on a DVD, so for now you'll just have to keep reliving the duo's Coachella set video .

And the new Mixmag features a great look inside the Daft Pyramid, with Thomas Bangalter giving a rudimentary breakdown of the gear they use. (danke Daily Swarm )

1. ABLETON
“The show revolves around Ableton Live software on custom made super-computers, which we remotely access and control with Behringer BCR2000 midi controllers.”
2. SCREENS
“Next to the ethernet remote computer screens there are four Minimoog Voyagers, the classic analog synthesizers. They’re a 30-year old design.”
3. MOOGS
“We can mix, shuffle, trigger loops, filter, distort samples, EQ in and out, transpose or destroy and deconstruct synth lines. We keep some surprises on the side too!”
4. VISUALS
“There’s a direct connection between our rig and the lights and visuals of the show. The light and video engineers can also add or control layers during the show.”
5. SYNTHS
“Inside the pyramid are synthesizers and remote controls connected to the rest of the music equipment and computers, which are in rack-mounted towers off stage.”
6. TEAMWORK
“Working the music equipment, lighting and video equipment, and building the pyramid for each show takes around 10 people, including both of us.”

they didn't mention that those "screens" are some version of these:

[the lights & logo are the same, but in different spots, so they're either prototypes or customized]

thats about 15k right there id say since the lemurs are around 3000 each. there's an entire discussion about this on the Ableton forums which I won't get into because i dont feel like getting flamed but I'll just say that i think they are entirely overrated for what they do and for Live PA be sure to check out BT or trentemoller or Bjork instead as they are not all hype.

Why would they need "super computers" to begin with ? I mean, in what way do they mix their music differently compared to other DJs ? They are using Ableton, so that takes care of many things. Most DJs are alone and fiddle with a lot of equipment themselves.

Maybe... But if you've ever seen someone use it who has computer coding knowledge and some out of the box thinking... they seem worth it.

I've seen some crazy custom interfaces that you just would never see without that sort of controller.

Sick photo.

well they do a lot of live PA stuff not just spinning one record then the next...so they need machines that can handle 15-30 channels going live easily which explains the need for super machines. it's too bad the music is a bit basic and mostly recycled samples but their a big hit in the commercial world.
