pity..

These things barely register a whimper on the news anymore. Not even enough to pull some reactions on a board full of people who take somewhat of an interest in such things.

what the fuk is wrong with us when a thousand people die in a week and all it gets is a blurb on page 26 of the local paper..

but on the bright side, this tribe that got bombed was the one that had stoned the 18-yr-old girl for eloping with a lover (and filmed the stoning on a cell phone).

so.. I realize this doesn't sound very nice, but many of these people got what they deserved. Sorry but no matter how horrific this bombing was, the public stoning of a girl recorded on video is even more horrific. Fuckin' animals

Yes and the 300 people that died all took part or supported he stoning of this girl

Much like the 2000 people that died in 9/11 would have tacitly supported the abuse in Abu Ghraib or the wrongful death of Iraqis by American soldiers making their deaths justified based upon no evidence whatsoever. Give me a fucking break.

I obviously cannot speak for foreign news sources, but these events certainly do get coverage in all media outlets in the UK. I think the thing is, they occur so often that we kinda become hardened to them and they don't mean as much.

It's a fucking mess in Iraq and nobody has the answers. Our troops have an impossible task of trying to quell the various insurgencies, a task they cannot complete. If we pull our troops out then we leave security in the hands of the Iraqi security force which may not be up to the task of providing security to the Iraqi population.

I still don't think we know enough about the insurgency to make an educated decision over how our presence there could effect the security situation. Similar to the problem Israel has I guess - does our presence increase or decrease security?

The Mahdi Army (Sadr's Shia militia) is, as far as I can work out, the largest and most popular (and probably who we should have allied ourselves with when we invaded). They have said they will continue the fight until Coalition forces have left. They are the enemies of al-Qaida in Iraq - who I would say are the main culprit in stirring things up. The Sunni insurgencies, who allied themselves together after the outbreak of war have sought to distance themselves from the al-Qaida types because of the level of violence they promote and the strict adherence to Sharia Law (something the whole of Iraq is against - including Sadr's Mahdi Army)

Whether we stay or go - I think the olive branch needs to go out to the former Baathists (and other moderate Sunni groups) and the Shia militias. If we can negotiate a peace with them and isolate those following the al-Qaida form of Islam then hopefully we can corner and eliminate them. Without the threat of the Shias and Baathists, this could perhaps be achieved with or without the presence of Coalition troops...

Ah yes, indiscriminate genocidal retribution is just punishment for a much smaller crime. Do you also pull out an uzi and shoot the entire neighborhood when the people next door disrupt your slumber?

The thing is though -- you have to ask yourself who exactly stoned that girl. Was it an isolated group of individuals, or the whole community?

Unfortunately, the answer seems to be "the whole community" (which is how stoning happens). Moreover, without the tacit approval of the community, this wouldn't have happened.
