They burn a wick inside little bell-shaped jars, heating the air inside.
After that, they put it on your body, where it cools, creating a pressure difference and sucking your skin up into the jar, pulling up blood and other fluids towards the skin.
The reason that it works s because it releases blood from areas of poor circulation (i.e tight/injured muscles), which allows new blood to flow in and repair the area, just like conventional massage or the hot/cold technique. The darker the mark left behind, the more "stale" the blood behind was (stale means lots of co2 instead of oxygen).
My marks are a deep burgundy, which means they are bad, but not overly. Apparently some people with pluracy and lung diseases get jet black welts. I'd take a photo of mine but I have no camera.
Before today, I didn't even know that this masseuse, who've I've probably seen fifteen or twenty times, mostly during my athletic career, could do this stuff. Crazy.
p.s I'm freezing my nuts off. Apparently this technique makes you lose a lot of heat. I'm sitting here in a thermal vest, full length lycra tights, trackpants, a long-sleeve t-shirt and a hoody, but I'm still pretty cold.
