hi, this is my first post. i have a question about synthesizers (vanguard etc).

u know how u get presets in your synthesizer when u install it and u can download more (sound banks i think they are called) - are each of the presets/sound banks actual soundclips in there own right (.wavs or whatever) OR do they just adjust/manipulate the synthesizers settings/effects to create the sound? in other words the synthesizer already has the sound capability in it without any presets/sound banks - if u were good enough to program it.

The synth could make the sounds itself if you were good enough to program it. But some synths use Wav files in their oscillators, in which case the patch might contain some wavs as well.

to my understanding, every vst have their own engine which produces sound that is unique to the vst itself. presets that comes with the vst (or downloads) are merely stored settings that is usually tweaked to produce a specific sound.

to clear your doubt, there are vst(s) that uses the actual sound using wave file or any other format readable by the vst. these kind of vst are better known as romplers. an example of such vst is atmosphere and nexus.

i see. so (i seen this on another post) what is the difference between these 2 types of synth?

and is there a need for both types?

Subtractive synths are based on getting certain sounds from an oscillator and then filtering certain frequencies out of them, thats why they're SUBTRACTIVE. But there are other kinds of synths as well: FM, granular and additive are all examples, you can look them up on wikipedia. I'm not familiar with predator or Morphine, so I don't know what they are exactly.

As for whether there is a need for more than one type of synth, it very much depends on what your doing. You can certainly make a track with only 1 type, but you'll have more sounds at your disposal with more. Also, many synths integrate more than one kind of synthesis, even mainly subtractive synths like the nord lead 3 have some FM features these days. A synth like absynth can handle subtractive, granular and some limited FM, but full FM requires a matrix and is very difficult to program, so very few synths are "true" FM synths.

Morphine is an additive synth although I though predator was subtractive with some extra goodies thrown in?

Romplers can have a wider tonal palette due to them being based on samples e.g. vocals etc or samples of real world instruments etc

I dunno if anyone answered your question yet but.. Yes. Every patch in Vanguard can be turned into any other patch if you know what you're doing. Yes, vanguard has the ability to make any preset you have from any bank from scratch.
