As for the topic - well, the artist wants to maximize the potential, financially. The more labels you can license your material to, the more records you're going to sell. The more people will know you. You can extend to a greater fan base, if licensing to international labels.

A question that comes up here is wouldn't the label you first sign your track to prohibit signing it to another one? Or does that depend on the contract?

Of course it depends on the label. Some artists dont have the privilege of going around and releasing their stuff on different labels because they have signed a (long-term) deal with their current label that really pretty much prohibits them from releasing elsewhere, or places serious limitations on what they can do. Like the famous Larry Heard, who in his early years struggled to find a decent label that gave him more rights and didnt rip him off, so eventually he ended up making his own music label.
