Job Background checks and credit reports

I just got offered a job recently, and the company has to do a background check, including a credit report. I was wondering how bad does your credit report have to be for them to all of a sudden revoke the job offer?

Depends on the job. Is it a bank job? And I'd say if your report comes to lower than 500-600, they might revoke you, depending on your job position.

They did that for me as well. I didn't have any type of credit when I first started this job but I got a credit check up last year sometime. I think it's a great idea. I woldn't want to hire someone who couldn't handle money. Also shows no self control if you have bad credit.

I can't see how having bad credit would affect someone's decision to hire you. Some people get in financial trouble, especially when they're younger. That's a bit of discrimination on their part.

i would like if that was the case, but unfortunately they do these credit reports for a reason in background checks...im just kinda scared cuz there was like a hospital bill and a tire-job bill that i just put off for a while, then eventually paid them long after the bills were first issued...at that time during college i didn't understand credit reports or their importance...now i just hope it wont fuck me over

Probably more looking for indicators of something like tax evasion or a bankruptcy, rather than just someone who can't pay their bills on time or racked up a bit of debt when they where younger.
Don't sweat it.

Anything you do/don't do towards your credit will effect you in the long run. No one should get a credit card without knowing the damage that they could potentially do to themselves. Credit can fuck you over when buying a house/condo/car, it can effect your job, and even backround checks for other thing that don't even involve work.

I hope you still get your job.

Yes, most likely they are looking for bankruptcy and things of that nature. It's not so much a matter of score, as serious diligence of credit... because it is a reflection of character. Even at that point, I wouldn't discount the job - they'd likely bring it up to you and ask? After all, situations do happen, especially with divorce, custody, etc...

I wouldn't sweat it if all you are worried about is your score.

True, but avoiding credit is not a good way to get good credit either.

If you just pay the full balance on your card each month, you can actually help your score a lot over time just using a credit card responsibly.

Dont worry about a hospital bill. Most of the time hospital bills dont affect buying a car or things like that where u get money from lenders. Hospital bills are mostly looked at as being something insurance companys forgot to pay (which is actually pretty common). Im sure this company will look at the in the same way.

well in my case the hospital bill was the portion that my health insurance didn't cover, so basically it only covered a portion of the bill while i was responsible for the other portion
