What is the late or absent policy at your job? Do you get in shit if you're late? Do your superiors expect a call if you're going to be late, or do you just show up late and say, "Sorry I'm late!"?
What about sick days, missing shifts, going home sick, etc?

Within reason, I arrive and leave whenever I feel like it. My boss is coo' like dat.
My sick leave and vacation leave is combined in what is called "comprehensive leave" and is accrued at a certain rate depending on how long you've been with the company.

they're super flexible about it at my job, as long as you're responsible and you don't abuse it.
i always call to let my supervisor know if i'm running late, even if i'm only running 5 minutes late. luckily it doesn't really matter, since our office is open from 7am-6pm every day, we can pretty much work whatever hours we want as long as we work a 40-hour week. for example, today is the 2nd day this week that i've come in 45 minutes later than i normally do (i usually get in at 9am), but i'll just end up working until 5:45 to make up for it.
sick days, going home sick, etc.. they're super awesome about that stuff too. we get up to 4 occurrences per year, and then after that you just have to provide a doctor's note if you're sick again.
I usually arrive 10 minutes late... but I also leave 10~15 minutes later than I should, so it's all right, I guesss
I can be absent whenever I need, as long as I tell my boss. I, for example, am going today to a seminar in São Paulo, and my boss didn't mind the fact that I'm going to be absent until Saturday.
The fact that I'm paid by the hour is certainly a reason why my job is not bad in that matter. If I don't work, I just don't get paid

I work from home and work however long i want with maybe 50 minutes of contact with my company / week. For example i'm in boxer-briefs currently, drinking coffee and intend to stay this way until approximately 10:00, at which point i will go downstairs and battle the mighty dungeon gladiators in Suikoden V.
I'd probably, say, in a given week, I probably do about 5 hours of real, actual work.
Whyyyy meeeeee Goooodddddddd, whyyyyyyyyyy?????

I make my own hours.
With regard to my employees... I'm pretty flexable, as long as they get their work done and we're meeting our obligations to our clients.

My work doesn't even care. I can get away with murder and they would be like " Oh, it was Tricia? awww she killed someone" I can't NOT come wihtout reason, obviously, I just call my boss and say " yap, I'm not coming in today.. see you tomorrow" If I'm going to be late I don't call, I don't have a job where I would need someone to cover my shift so I come in late sit down and start working.
I do the same with my assistant. If she's late she's late, no questions asked. If she's not coming in she just gives me a quick call.

I can show up anywhere between 8 and 10 as long as I finish what I need to get done on a given day unless I have meetings or procedures planned at a specific time. As far as not showing up, my PI is very flexible, sometimes even allowing me to take 1/2 days and not counting it against my sick days or vacation days.
Oh and I get 25 vacation days and 25 sick days a year, plus 12 paid holidays, not too bad!

unless you are coughing up blood, vomiting, or having explosive diarhea (sp?) you're expected to stay at work (i.e. no going home sick because of a headache or something simple like that).
as far as calling in sick, you better have the same items as above, or be in the hospital.
