This better not be another monitor thread...

...but it is!

I've read plenty of these threads before so i get the idea that I need to try some out as I will have my own preference.

All I actually want to know is this...

looking at the different monitors available, I see there will often be different price brackets of the same monitor

Eg. KRK RP5, RP6 and RP8.

Looking at the specs, it seems they are the same apart from bigger woofers and higher wattage outputs.

1) Are they often the same apart from these differences?

2) In a room that is 12ftx12ft, would there be a certain size woofer or wattage output that would definately be too big, too small so I could rule those out of my choices?

3) Any other reasons why its important to go for the bigger more powerful models.

Cheers

Greg

You should just ignore everyone on these forums, burn a CD full of test tones and tunes and just go and listen to all of those monitors. Then make up your own mind.

To do anything else would be to just buy into someone's elses subjective bullshit.

If your nearest store or internet retailer doesn't give you a 2 week grace period, home trial period or at least the opportunity to audition any speaker at one of their retail outlets - you don't want to be buying speakers from them. Because they suck.

I used to have a pair of KRK RP-5's and, after a couple years, upgraded to the KRK V8's. The only real reason really is the low's. I used to use a sub with my RP-5s, but it pissed off my neighbors so I said f* it and got the V8's which let you hear the low's pretty well without getting that rumbling subbass.

Go with 6" or 6.5" monitors. Bigger isn't always better, especially if your room is untreated.

and definately if you are buying anything less than top of the line monitors. cheap monitors rarely have amplifiers capable of running big cones properly.

+1. This is why RP8s & Behringers don't sound good. Also, they're not matched to the tweeter and crossed over properly lol.

Id look into getting your room treated as well, i dont think 12x12 are good dimensions either for bass response cos its square, Diginerd has posted some good info about this in the past

Ive got a set of Mackie HR624s and have never gotten the best outta them simply because the bass response in my room is really bad...that said if u learn what to look for in your monitors i dont think it really matters which make u go for, it will just take you a while to get used to them.........

To richg101, eldritch and a couple of others, thank you for trying to answer the main quesions I was asking...

To the ones who just recommended me a monitor, that wasn't what I was asking.

To palm and whoever else wanting me to search, I have read loads of "what montior" threads on here where everyone says what they personally like. Eventually the thread gets settled with "try yourself at local store and see what you prefer" which is good advice.

People also talk about room treatments and acoustic environments and god knows what else. If I do a search I will find these threads again which is pointless because I have read all this time and time again but I'm asking about specifically the differences in the same model but with big woofer/tweeter and higher wattage.

Eldritch, richg, you both think that 6" is probably the way to go. My budget would be £300 so they certainly wouldnt be top end so maybe 8" at that price or bit more would be crap.

Thanks for the advice. Anyone else with advice specifically to what I'm asking...

Cheers

Greg

personally i would go for the smaller cones because you will get a much better performance/price ratio. the bigger models in the same price range may go that little bit lower, but it wont be that much of a benefit because the control of the cone will suffer.

at the price range you are talking i would look at something like the 'passive' alesis m1's and buy a external rack mount amp off ebay.

these: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Alesis-M1-Act...1QQcmdZViewItem (but get the passive, non active ones)

and something like this:http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ALESIS-RA-300...1QQcmdZViewItem
or this:http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MATRIX-STR600...1QQcmdZViewItem

the components in the alesis's will be the same standard as the £300 priced models. you will gain some serious improvement in sound quality, control and bass response by opting for an external amplifier - thats for sure.
