don't forget about burma

i really don't care about that jailed up celebrity, but when they hurt the monks, then it gets personal.

I wonder if the Americans will be supporting the overthrowing of a dictatorship when the alternative is a religious theocracy?!

I think a Buddhist theocracy would be quite nice to live in personally!

Seriously tho, I hope they don't end up like in 1988 where 1000s died. I'm not sure how successful peaceful protests will be against a military regime that doesn't give a shit. It's not like India where Ghandi led a successful peaceful protest against the British because Britain cared and had to act on international pressure, but Burma is already under international pressure and doesn't care.

Hopefully they can get some of the army on their side as this is the main source of power for any dictatorship...

I agree, if the regime doesn't see some form of incentive to cave into demands, they simply won't.

Did you know that Buddhism is the only religion that says masturbation, homosexuality, etc. are all OK?

Can't believe this thread is not constantly at the top!

This is by far the most significant event that is happening in the world right now!

Latest developments:

Minimum of 9 people killed so far
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/as...fic/7016608.stm

Burmese government has blocked the internet
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/mai...t/wburma828.xml
This is very bad as most of the information and images escaping Burma were transmitted via the internet. Without these I think the military could come down hard behind the "curtain" where noone can see what they are doing

European Parliament has condemned the Junta, China and Russia and called for targetted economic sanctions
http://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/.../default_en.htm

Maybe you could explain to the rest of us why you even bothered to post on this thread if you don't care?

I can't speak for anyone else, but the prospect of the masses rising up against a brutal military dictatorship is something I find incredibly interesting and support wholeheartedly, and judging by the coverage this is receiving in the press I'm not alone in my thoughts...

Yes, because the press represent the views of the population.

That post was simply my own arrogant way of asking you why you care.

Sometimes. Sometimes the population represents the views of the press.
