I've never heard of the "Mandelas movement". Actually, Mandela regime has been plagued by corruption and numerous scandals. Some of his stances have drawn criticism. He is not an innovator. And Bush did say in that clip that he is dead. LOL. I wouldn't label Mandela the things that you did, I actually would compare him to more of Mugabe, and how Mugabe tried to "free" his people from the white occupation and look at Zimbabwe today.

There's a reason why Mandela had to immigrate to Canada, because in his South Africa he'd be thrown in jail. His own daughter is involved in some kind of corruption scandals for Christ's sake ... Bush is an idiot.

Ermmmmmmm... no. Read up on Mandela - he's a class chap who had to deal with an awful lot of problems when he took over a country living down the legacy of 100 years of racial oppression. Any comparison with Mugabe ends with "they were both the first black presidents of their state." They do vet Nobel Peace laureates before giving them the prize after all.

And anyway, the funniest part of this story is that the Mandela Foundation in South Africa issued a statement clarifying that Mandela is still alive and they don't know what the hell Bush is on about. Apparently in South Africa it's considered very impolite to conjecture about Mandela's health as well, as he is getting rather old but is still much-loved.

I guess I was being very harsh on him in my initial comment. He did lead his country through the tough times, and noone should expect him to be a perfect politician. He had to tolerate corruption and power abuse to keep his government together. He greatly helped to end the apartheid. Kudos to him ;-)

Though Mugabe had a lot of success for Zimbabwe in the 1980s/90s, but since then he just lost it.

A reporter probably challenged Bush's commitment to maintain a US presence in Iraq, and so Bush tried to justify the lack of progress by basically saying that there's no one over there with the gumption to get the country back on its feet - that there is nobody like Nelson Mandela, who took South Africa through a period of very tough reconciliation in order to keep the national government together and unified.

he was actually using his own Ambassador's words (Ryan Crocker). it was from a WaPo article earlier this month. >LINK< for some strange reason no one made an issue of Crocker's metaphor when he essentially says the exact same but when Bush does it at a press conference people lose their frikken minds.

because bush said Mandela is dead. he obviously butchered the metaphor.
