Review/Videos: Beastie Boys @ Air Canada Centre - September 21st, 2007
I was uber excited for this show and the fun began even before entering the ACC. This was only my 2nd time trying to negotiate with scalpers to upgrade my tickets and it was a little tricky. I thought our tickets in section 106 + 20-25 dollars each was reasonable for floors. Not according to these professionals I guess. This one guy was so upset by our offer he started yelling at us. He told us that floors were worth 200 dollars (my fucking ass!) and that we needed to go to a bank machine if we wanted to deal with him. He actually exploded on us.. it was unreal. After about 45 minutes to an hour of circling the ACC and talking to about 10+ scalpers, I managed to get us floors for 25/each.
Anyways.. on to the show. This was my first concert since the Chili Peppers back in.. I can't even remember when that was now. First time seeing the Beastie's period.. and it was a decent one at that. Mix Master Mike got things going with some fancy turntable tricks and MC work before the rest of the boys took the stage. Despite their (now) old age they maintained an impressive stage presence. If you were up close, you had to decide who you were gonna watch because they were always running around the stage. The smell of marijuana filled the air for most of the show, as expected. Since the only security watching the crowd on the floor was at the front, it was pretty easy to get away with smoking one during the show. They ripped through song after song, taking some time outs to talk to the crowd. They sent a dedication out to the two guys dressed up like bunnies. About an hour and 15 minutes in the show they left the stage and came back for a few encores and finished with Sabotage.
All in all, it was an impressive show. It was definitely different going to a concert that only made up of a DJ and 3 MCs for most of the performance, but it was a good different. In addition to the show being a little on the short side (around 90 minutes), they missed a bunch of key songs as well, some of which took me by complete suprise. Overall, I give it a 7.5/10.
