Thoughts on the current SoCal electronica scene?

I'm 23 and kinda kicking myself that I haven't gone to any good DJ performances. I've been following this music for 10 years now, and have plenty of live mixes. I really want to start going to Vanguard, Nocturnal, etc. I actually missed Nocturnal because of work..which sucks.

What I'm asking is, did I miss out because I didn't go to see DJs 2, 3, 4 years ago? Or are the venues/events/music (Trance, House, DnB) getting better and better? I'm planning on going to see Above and Beyond on the 20th @ Vanguard, which will pretty much be my first event.

I don't know the answer since I haven't really seen any good sets live...

Another thing, it seems like Sasha, PvD, Tong, Oakenfold, Digweed, Chem Bros. have been spinning out here more commonly only in the past 3 or so years. Is that right?

Just get out there and go man. These are by far your best years for that. Many will argue about the current state of the scene, so I won't offer up much advice except just get the heck out there and do it! Experience it yourself, not what others tell you. You'll quickly learn which spots are great to hang out at and such. Your preferences may change a bit once you actually see certain DJs live...it definitely adds a new perspective, that's for sure.

But if you're truly into this music, you won't regret going. And don't just save your outings for the big guys. There are many other great acts that are just as fun, and many times even better!

To answer your last question, most of those guys have been playing out here since the late 90s/early 2000s, not just the last 3 years. They definitely do come back more often as the scene has grown quite a lot out here.

Thanks for the input. I edited my post a little bit because the last question sounded a little ignorant, heh. You're right, I should just go out there and experience it all myself. I guess the music hasn't changed all that much. I am really disappointed that I missed Nocturnal, though. I heard it was a lot of fun.

The scene here is definately different than the scene in Europe. Here most clubs play hip hop and top 40 where as there its all house/trance electro etc.

Every venue and DJ has a lil different feel and vibe to it. Massives like Monster Massive have a way different feel than Vanguard nights.

In general, everyone is way more friendly than hip hop. Hip hop it seems like everyone is trying to look cooler than the other.

In general house DJ's have a way better looking crowd than trance dj's.

The way you dance is also way different with different types of electro.

I love listening to trance. Especially in the car, but at the club I could use a lil bit of a lower bpm like house.

Good luck. Took me a while to get used to the scene, you'll be a regular in no time!

My dilemma is usually finding people to go with that are into it as much as I am. Helps when I'm also involved somewhere with the event.

i love the edm scene in so cal!!! i live in san francisco, but i miss massives in LA... i lived in europe too before, but when i did, i really missed edm scene in so cal! (LOS ANGELES!)

many people say the scene was way better in the late 90's... but tell u what... it is still nice! u can make it as nice as it can be... the scene for sure had changed over time, the music is different, even trance sounded different from way back when.. but it is the beauty of the evolution that kept me wondering of what's happening next! enjoy the scene while u can... it has given me the best years of my life...

now psy trance is starting to emerge in the US scene... i've seen this in europe happening around 2003, and i would never thought that infected muhsroom could ever be a crowd favorite like they are now here...

things are definitely constantly changing...

I love the SoCal scene. I spent about 8 years in Vegas, and while the edm scene was alright, SoCal's was and is still better. I remember going to a massive they tried out there in 2001, and they were shut down at midnight by the police (supposedly because of 'permit' issues)!!

The scene in the clubs is more house-oriented over there, but Giant does bring the big trance names to a couple spots (Jet, Empire, etc). All in all, after moving to San Diego, I can tell you that I'm definitely having way more fun out here than in Vegas.

Noc was so much fun, more fun than I've had, and I'm definitely looking forward to Monster and NYE!

Thanks a lot for all the feedback everyone. I guess what I'm hoping for is to go out and see PvD, Sasha, Tiesto, etc and hear high tempo, banging trance..not vocalized pop music (like recent releases from the aforementioned).

I know Avalon is shutting down, what's going on with the other two?
