Recording Live in FL Studio

hey gang, does anyone know if there is a way of recording live audio over a song In FL 7 without recording the audio and song together?

I've been trying to record vocals over tracks for some time now. it seems like the only way you could record vocals in FL studio is by not having anything in your play list, (no background song) otherwise the audio would be recorded over the song.

does anyone know a way around this?

p.s. using another DAW is not really the answer i'm looking for

cheers

1. choose an fx channel in the fl mixer
2. select your soundcard for the input (where it says "none")
3. click the rec button with the disk image in the mixer and choose where you want the recorded file to go.
4. put the record button on, hit play and sing

lol

i just boot pro-tools

seriously though, as great as FL studio is,
anything is better than recording using it.

before I made the move and bought into the mbox/protools scene, I just used the freeware program "audacity"... it gets the job done and takes about 0 cpu for massive recordings if you wish.

this is what i used to think as well, but after doing it so many times, recording is actually quite simple and fast.

i don't see any problems with the recording. maybe it sucked in the first versions (<4) but now it's fine.
how is recording with audacity easier than with fl? when you record with fl, the recording goes right where you want it to go, and you can record it while the song is playing or with metronome. plus you can record it with it's effect.

i agree to this. they fix most of the problems in version 7 so its a lot more user friendly.

audio editing is still inferior to cubase/logic/sonar imo. you can't even zoom in close enough on the playlist to do slicing accurately. therefore, you have to do it in edison, which is a total pain in the ass - much better to have it all in the timeline IMO!

with the zoom tool you can zoom close enough. i don't know about you but for me this is definitely close enough to adjust the clips to the right time or chop them..

i mean ofcourse it's not as good as with cubase and others, but it gets the job done, you can time your audio perfectly and chop them where needed. there are always external audio editing programs to do the rest.
