[Ambient / Downtempo] Clouded Highlands (Original Mix) - [putfile]

I haven't been on complete hiatus lately. I made this track a while back and never shared it with you folks.

This little creation is the result of another "effeciency test" for my FLStudio mixing creativity. I use to do it every once in a while to challenge myself. I limit myself to only FLStudio synths and plugins. I did use a few sampled string samples, but the majority of the stacked string samples are from FL's folders.

Cast of characters (it's a 3xOSC kinda project):
Kick Drum - 3xOSC + FruityKick
Snare - 3xOSC
Pan Flute - 3xOSC
Hats - 3xOSC
One of the Hats - FL sample
Bright Strings - FL samples
Reso Strings - Octopus (Linplug) sample
Synthy Strings - Roland JP-8080 sample
Harp - FL keys with tons and tons of effects to make it sound like a harp.
Bleepy Dream Intro Synth - 3xOSC

Enjoy, I hope. Being how much I limited myself in time and resources, I hope that you can enjoy the fact that I tried to incorperate many melodies that I played live. It's sort of a somber, downtempo feel with a tad of New Age.

nice melodic intro and smooth patterns: liking the sounds but the flute seems to resonate a bit high or clip several times as my monitors can tell... i always used to have my master too high when working in fl.
the melodic lines and vibe is very nice, peacefull, pleasant to listen to.
great chillout track ^_^

Hey B, glad to see some Chillout.
Very nice, sad mood, reminds me of Donkey Kong Country style, very cool.
I personally would used a Bass not so prominent, a good sin bass for example, or something more sub, but that's personal taste.
The overall sound is very clean, I concur about the flute.
I would use a more comprensive use of the panoramics, the stereo image is not bad, but you could use much more of your stereo spectrum, so your mix sounds more relaxed, and all the instruments can breath.
My suggestion are:

A better use of your stereo (Panoramics)
To fix the flute sound

Other than that, I really enjoyed ur choon .

Kopi =o.

Thanks for the feedback, all.

@ Kopi

I am honored to be critiqued by an ambient veteran. I do not have much experience in the genre, but I agree that I might have gotted a little gun-ho on the bassline.

There are definately parts where the flute pushes the mix to clip. In fact, the piano-turned-harp, also clips (at least once in the breakdown). Since I was mixing this tune in a college dorm room at the time, I might have either gotten lazy about the clipping or couldn't hear it.

You are not the first person to comment about my lack of Panoramics or ineffecient use of stereo field. I can hear it myself, and when I apply stereo widening effects to my strings (for instance), I can hear a good, but very untame difference. In fact, in order to improve the stereo field, I sense that a very strong overhaul is going to need to take place (even my percussion instruments sound too weak when I widen the fields). This is one of the reasons why I hate being limited to headphones most of the time -- because my stereo image sucks.

I want to someday remix this tune with all of my tools at disposal to make it a better piece.
