Maine school board approves birth control for middle schoolers (11-13)

quote:
PORTLAND, Maine — Pupils at a city middle school will be able to get birth control pills and patches at their student health center after the local school board approved the proposal Wednesday evening.

The plan, offered by city health officials, makes King Middle School the first middle school in Maine to make a full range of contraception available to students in grades 6 through 8, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services.

There are no national figures on how many middle schools, where most students range in age from 11 to 13, provide such services.

Give me a motherfucking break.

They're making this a confidential option for students too, in case they don't want their parents knowing they're on birth control. What the fuck?!

Although I really don't think they're old enough to play snooker, I'd rather see these kids taking the necessary measures in their early teens than see them taking care of teens during their late 20's.

great idea. teach the kids that a simple pill or patch will be enough to protect them from any coincidences of having sex. in a few years their high school will be passing out free condoms and free antibiotics for all the STDs they procure.

Good.

This should be absolutely no alternative for thorough sexual education and individual responsibility (we're back to this again), but the more irresponsible mistakes prevented from children, the better, no?

Though it hardly seems like Maine should be a place where this is absolutely necessary...

And so the problem will just work itself out.

what's your problem? why shouldnt they have access to birth control? are you in favour of children having children or just telling them what to do and how to live?

I don't see how it's necessary at all to be honest. In the last 4 years theres been 14 cases of teen pregnancy in Maine.

I hate to say it but at the same time instead of teaching these kids (while they're young and still willing to learn) about the dangers of having sex at such a young age we're completely ignoring putting forth an effort and just going for the easiest thing on the list; a stupid pill/patch.

Just my opinion.

They aren't old enough to know the contraceptive technique of facials?

The pill also helps regulate a period. I knew a few girls who were on it at 12 but didn't actually end up having sex until they were 17 and one at 18. I don't agree with it but if it''s going to stop teen pregnancy, all aboard.

Yeah, that is the part that seemed unnecessary to me.

I guess this is really racist, but I would think that innercity neighbourhoods where there are a lot of pregnancies to black girls would be a much better experiment in introducing birth control this early into a population; you would, undoubtedley, be able to gather a lot more data, and certainly more diversity of data than fucking Maine.

Or maybe send a whole lotta birth control to Africa or something. I dunno - is this eugenics? Is it really an immoral concept? Population needs to be curbed sometimes...let's not address AIDS as population control for blacks and gays and drug users or anything, but children having children is a pretty big thing in Maine.

What am I even on about.
