In another thread there was a poster who called Kai Tracid's track 'Aural Border' neo trance because his friend told him so and he wanted some recommendations. For me that track sounded more like the countless other bandwagon attempts at boarding the tech-house ship.
Rather than ruin his thread I decided to write a little rant why I believe neo trance doesn't exist. The prefix neo- means new. In this case a deviation from the norm resulting in a "new form of something or a revival". For example, a neo-con which is a person who shares some conservative views but differ greatly on other conservative issues to the point where they cannot be called traditional conservatives, but neoconservatives. Neo-nazis is another one. They share the same values as nazis but also deviate in the fact that they deny the holocaust whereas the nazis don't because they take pride in that.
But I digress. Neo trance suggests that there is a new form of trance from the standard. Whenever a track follows this rebellious pattern I usually just call it progressive trance instead of neo trance because it means the same thing in terms of definition.
Musically speaking, the tracks certain people call neo trance sound a lot like techno, techno-house, and similar related genres that already exist.
Feel free to share your views.

I understand what "neotrance" refers to. Slightly melodic (or trancy) but still with the stripped down raw quality of techno or tech-house. Pretty good stuff if you ask me, but it's not really some big departure from or revival of any existing style, so i'm not sure about the use of the label. I mean, it's not like melodic techno hasn't been done before. It feels like a forced buzzword. It sounds kinda cool though, "neotrance", and who knows, if enough people adhere to this particular style perhaps it will grow to become a true subscene/subgenre rather than just a few tunes here and there.

Am I the only one who sees the retardedness in all this genre defining? It's either good, or it's not.
Edit: this is the second time in 3 months that you read a post on a certain subject (on the first page of MD) and feel that it's absolutely necessary to start a whole new thread to discuss the exact same fucking subject. You DO know how to reply to existing threads, right? In case you don't, all you do is press the button that looks like this: at the bottom of the page. It's right next to the one you've been pressing
Neo-trance has been around for a while, but most just called it Mr. Anderson-trance.
