Should a closer listen to their openers set?

Too many times I hear a headliner play the same songs that their opener played, because the closer wasn't there to hear the opener?

You think it should slide or there should be there.

I saw a local dj wear a shirt that said, "Same songs, different DJ."

If a headliner is closing then the local opener should know who they are opening for. The opener should not play a bunch of tracks the headliner will play but rather build up progressively to the headliners style.

Not everyone hears that track that the opener played or what if... "oooh I love that track and I'm listening to it again!"

DJs should stop playing the same tracks everyone else and their mother is playing, this might also help...

The promoters should also know the styles of the DJs they book.

If they book 2 headliners, make sure they are different!!!

So back to the topic... We have that problem a lot at one of my Top 40 residencies. When I open usually the other DJ is not there, and when I close I'm usually not there for the opening. So sometimes we play the same songs twice because we don't know what each one of us played.

Last night was a perfect example. I opened from 10pm to 11pm and I closed from 12:45 to 1:30am. The whole hour and half in between my sets I wasn't there. I took off to another club. So when I came back to close, I had no clue what he played. So what we do in cases like this, we tell each other what we played. And it works just fine.

In the Top 40 world, some songs are ok to play twice. Those are the hits. Like the stupid song I hate SOULJA BOY!!! God damn, I get like 20 requests for it every night. So playing that song twice is ok. Anything beyond that is a NO NO.

Oh the other hand, in the EDM World, there's so much music to choose from that playing the same song twice is a huge NO NO. People in the EDM world want something different, not a jukebox.
