Jori Hulkkonen

After giving Sasha's May 2005 Maida Vale EM a few more listens last week, I decided to pick up Jori Hulkkonen's Dualizm album off iTunes, since both "Science" and "Lo-Fiction" are on there and those two tracks bookend what I think is the greatest hour of liveset ever recorded.

And, predictably maybe, I love the album. It's a few years old, but the sound is completely fresh to me - a combination of jazz and EDM that I had never heard sound so refined. It's different than St. Germain or even Zero 7, and I can't think of anything else quite like it. Dualizm is the first album I've just put on repeat since the second half of Bent's "Intercept!" album (first half was garbage), and it's left me wanting to find more like it.

Any suggestions? Is any of Jori's previous work similar?

Jori's earlier works and albums prior to Dualizm are more on the smoother side of deep house, house and techno with some occasional downtempo and breaksy jazzy pieces stuck in between. Quality material all the way through anyway. I recommend.

You might wanna check some albums released on the Greek label Klik Records. There are quite a few not too dissimilar with Dualizm. Too tired to give more details but maybe tomorrow..

Thanks, I think I'm definitely going to have to track down some of his earlier stuff. I'm not sure how I missed him for so long, because I really love that jazzy sound, whether it be in downtempo or house.

I also discovered Jori Hulkkonen from the maida vale set. Lo-fiction is soooooooooo good. I listened to samples from dualizm, and didn't like any of the other tracks except science/lo-fiction.

"Blinded by Numbers" is actually my favorite track off the album I think.

Mostly learned of Hulkkonen when he worked with Tiga as Zyntherius. Haven't heard much beyond his Turbo output, but most of it's mint.

I think this is the album I prefer from him
Selkäsaari Tracks

(I only realize now, watching the credits on discogs, how this one is old enough.)

When no one... is quite good: Let Me Luv U (Which is built on a totally phat sample from the Foxy Brown soundtrack by Willie Hutch, unless i am confusing tracks in this album) is a killer track. Flash Boy is also a good candidate there. More catchy tunes, but I feel it is a tad below the Selkäsaari Tracks.

I was turned off by the Different album, though... more of the same and lack of any fresh perspective. But I'll try to put an ear on Dualizm though.

Indeedo. 'Let Me Luv U' contains an extract from 'Hospital Prelude of Love Theme' by Willie Hutch. (taken from the sleeve credits of 'When No One Is Watching...').

I don't think 'Different' was in any way a turn-off for me. Quite the opposite really. What he does, he does so well it doesn't matter if he has a few albums of about the same ideas. Overall his stuff varies quite a bit from deeper techno to tech house, house and deep house mixed with some jazzy elements and downtempo and breaksy pieces.

He also has a more poppy album out under the Processory guise. Pretty addictive stuff but if Jerry Valuri's vocals aren't your thing, avoid.
