While it has been entertaining to follow (though getting a bit tiring and played out)... If (a big "if", I know) he helps the Yankees win the World Series (or the Yankees win the WS with him on the team, or in spite of him), will anyone remember any of this, and will anyone care?

I really don't understand all of the fuss. This is a trend lately, where the performers and staff are expected to take pay cuts, meanwhile management reaps the benefits. I think we saw in the Torre situation how management has been working and Joe left for less money from LA to cease dealing with it. We're also seeing similar situations in the stagehand and writers strikes going on now.
Secondly, of all the teams in the MLB, Yanks fans have the least right to bitch about their players being "mercenaries." They have the highest payroll in baseball for a reason, and it isn't because they think money will buy loyalty.
Lastly, if you don't think that A-Rod's performance this season helped get the Yanks into the playoffs after the lackluster start, I don't know what to tell you. He may have struggled in the playoffs, but so did most of the rest of the team, including NYC's golden boy, Jeter. You don't pay players just for the playoffs, but for the 162 games prior to them, plus the playoffs, and A-Rod led the league in HRs, RBIs, and Runs. Really, what more do you want? A better personality? You don't pay athletes for how nice they are, you pay them to perform.
Edit: Oh, and one more thing, compare the next two highest paid non-pitchers to A-Rod in terms of stats (Jeter and Giambi). A-Rod is, at least on the hitting side, far and away the best value. Now I'm not talking team leadership and fielding, just hitting, which is how runs are scored.
