looking into buying a coffin that will hold 2 CDJ-800s and a DJM-600 mixer(and with the wheels on one end to help ease back pain)...checked out a few at guitar center and samash...seemed to be exactly what I was looking for, only problem was they were pretty damn heavy in weight(even in their empty state)...any recommended case models you guys know of that is lighter in weight and easy to lug around to gigs?

check out RoadReady cases, they should have something for you. These are very good cases

I have the road ready case, and alone is pretty light, but once you add the CDJ's and the mixer, it's pretty heavy. I ended up buying individual cases to make it easier on me.

I was in the market for some equipment cases a while back. I opted for separate cases merely for the fact that I could set things up however I wanted and for future-proofing. With a coffin case, you're limited to both the number of decks and the size of mixer you can use with that case.

However, you do need at least 2 decks and a mixer to DJ (for all purposes, assume you're still spinning on decks), so a coffin would be an all-in-one solution. You could just get a sturdy keyboard stand and be ready to DJ anywhere. Since both your CDJs and mixer are 'standard'-sized (Pioneer CDJs, 12" mixer), I wouldn't worry too much about having to upgrade the coffin case, since the equipment you would potentially upgrade to would be the same size.

Not to hijack this thread, but does anyone have an effects unit and transport it around in a case? I haven't really come up with a good way to set one up with a coffin case type arrangement.

oh ok the road readies sound compelling (i know they would eventually get heavy, but the ones i saw were heavy even without anything loaded inside!)...and right now i am using the separate road readies...the only problem with that that i find is before each gig, having to disconnect/reconnect everything all over again and it would be nice if i could have everything in one, already connected...quick setup will give me time to set up other things i.e. lights, speakers

and AnomalyConcept...to store an effects unit, if you are talking about for the efx-500/1000, i havent seen any cases made specifically for those, but u can get one of those road readies that is made to house a cdj-200 and put in your efx there safely (im pretty sure it will fit, and the extra spaces around you can fill in for a better fit)...if im wrong and the EFX is bigger, you can always get a case thats slightly larger and fill in the extra spaces in between

Having everything wired up ready to go is indeed a big plus. I'm not sure if there's a built-in power strip, but it would be pretty trivial to add your own if there wasn't.

I've only really seen soft-shell cases made for the EFX units. I guess my question was more of how do people set them up, in terms of placement. With a coffin case, there's not much room for it to go anywhere, and having it on the side may not be an optimal position. I'd guess that one would mount it on a stand so it hovers above the mixer, but that would require additional hardware.

I opted to go the separate cases route but still set it up like a coffin on a stand. I just had to build a frame that sits underneath the cases to act as a flat surface. It's pretty sturdy (OnStage Z-stand) and compact.

coffin is bad. pain in the ass to carry

at least with ind cases you can either make multiple trips easier or have a buddy to help you out

Individual flight cases are the best way to go. Many coffins are hard to move especially by yourself. Being able to transport everything seperatly is not only more efficient but less strain on your part. And its better on your gear. But it also depends on how you want your setup to look. There are many different styles of coffins and cases. As far as having everything connected there is not much to connect in the first place. You will want to transport your cables in a seperate gear bag to prolong their life span and quality.

but having to unplug all the cables and plugging back in to the mixer and cd players every time...isnt that worse for the life span and quality of the wear and tear the cables will have, as opposed to just leaving them connected in a closed place?

One would think that, but when you travel with your gear and your cables are still connected they will bunch and tangle from the movement. That "Bunching" of the cables is what does the most damage. Granted its damage done over some time it still adds up. The connectors will not wear on your gear and cables. But twisting and bunching can. Be sure to coil up your cables and secure them when transporting. Same thing when you are at a gig, you coil any extra cable.

But its up to you. Since most decent cables are not that much and it takes a lot of wear for them to go out you can probably get away with keeping them connected to your mixer but coil them up in the coffin and secure them with like a tie wrap. You dont want any loose cables anywhere as they can tangle, pinch and even tare.
