Speculation?
People in better physical health tend to half more willpower. Of course this could be completely limited to factors which may affect only physical health, but it tends to be that the more willpower somebody has, the more successful they are at their lot in life - they aren't apathetic, they possess a strong degree of self-efficacy, and this quite often equates to a position of high individual productivity. Quite frankly, people who are more fit of body and mind tend to be more efficient on an individual level, and this often equates to financial well-being in western society.
If logic follows suit, the opposite must be true about fat people - they possess very little willpower or care for their craft. And it becomes quite apparent in their bodies.
But perhaps, since the impoverished also quite outnumber the wealthy, obesity rates merely seem higher? There are many different factors contributing to this fat-nomenon.
