Why are poor people fatter?

It's pretty well known that in Europe and America, rates of obesity are significantly higher among the poor.

Why is that the case?

I've heard the "bad food costs less" explanation a lot, but it makes no sense. How fat you get ultimately depends on how much you eat, not what you eat. You could eat nothing but McDonald's and still not get fat, as long as you ate a small enough amount.

Maybe they're poor because they're fat. Would YOU want a fatass representing YOUR company?

When welfare people shop and don't have enough money to pay for all the food they have in their buggy, what do they put back? Exactly!

if you eat one pound of mcdonalds everyday, you will gain more weight than if you eat one pound of fruits or vegatables.

Speculation?

People in better physical health tend to half more willpower. Of course this could be completely limited to factors which may affect only physical health, but it tends to be that the more willpower somebody has, the more successful they are at their lot in life - they aren't apathetic, they possess a strong degree of self-efficacy, and this quite often equates to a position of high individual productivity. Quite frankly, people who are more fit of body and mind tend to be more efficient on an individual level, and this often equates to financial well-being in western society.

If logic follows suit, the opposite must be true about fat people - they possess very little willpower or care for their craft. And it becomes quite apparent in their bodies.

But perhaps, since the impoverished also quite outnumber the wealthy, obesity rates merely seem higher? There are many different factors contributing to this fat-nomenon.

I'm pretty sure that's not the case - that's why medical diets trend toward replacing bad starches, sugars, etc. with proteins and fiber, and not just a mere reduction in quanitity or even calories really.
