Question "The Netherlands" or "Holland"??? Or BOTH?

I have a question: Why does that country have two different names: Holland, and The Netherlands? I heard that "Nederlands" is "Dutch" in Dutch so, that's why I call it "The Netherlands". But, what I'm curious about is WHY are there two different names? And where do they both originate from? Most people that I know who know about teh country call it "Holland" but, most directories and search engines (like Yahoo) have it listed as either "The Netherlands" or "Netherlands". Is there any "right" or "wrong" way of mentioning this country or are both accepted EVERYWHERE? If so, why would there be a wrong way of mentioning/indicating it? All help on this would be GREATLY appreaciated!

Both are right and acceptable. I think that the Netherlands is a more historical name, based on the region rather than just a country.
but i'm not sure, so i'm interested in what others have to say...

it is exactly the opposite, The Netherlands is the right name, Holland is based on a region in the country.

I actually don't care how you call it, I use both

THANKS for clearing that up for me! That's what I thought, "The Netherlands" is correct. It makes sense that the name of the language and the name of the country are similar...

LISTEN CAREFULLY I SHALL SAY THIS ONLY ONCE ( hehe )

When the name Holland is used instead of
The Netherlands, it actually refers to the two Western coastal provinces, North and South Holland, which have played an important role in the country's history, and that centuries ago the North-West of the Netherlands was covered with trees... That's where the name Holland comes from; "holt-land", which means woodland... and that The Netherlands is one of Europe's smallest and most densely populated countries.
Both its people and their language are known to English-speakers as Dutch, a name derived from Deutsch, meaning German. The name 'Netherland' is derived from the Dutch word 'neder' meaning 'low', and the term Low Countries is used collectively for Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, a reference to the low-lying nature of the land.
