Football/Soccer/Asso v. American Football/Gridiron.........the never ending debate

Let the never ending debate begin.... (and hopefully keep this debate here and not into each sport's respective threads)

My feelings are that people shouldn't get their panties in a wad when someone refers to association football as soccer because it is simply a common American truncation for Association football. Therefore if someone says soccer they're really saying association football. No need to get the panties ruffled.

I enjoy both sports equally. They each have their own strategies and skills that are fun to watch. Football is more non stop action and American Football requires more brute strength and agility. The best of each sport are fun to watch

I love them both. I've probably played a lot more footie than gridiron though.

Indeed. I get very fucking tired of people who for one reason or another decide to make a big deal out of the dual usage of the term "football."

And I enjoy watching American Football far more than I enjoy watching Euro footie, but absolutely love to play Euro football and cannot dream of even trying to play American football.

Football is football.

That sport you all play in america should be called catch or something - or valium, because it's good for sending you to sleep.

love both but its easier for me to watch football/soccer then gridiron. the american football is way too plagued with comercials. However i feel like i can follow the nfl stats much better since it is only one league rather then several european leagues.

I love it when the Brits get their knickers in a twist over this issue - they take it so personally.

both are fun to watch and have different elements of interest for me personally.

quote:
Soccer is an abbreviation for Association Football. The Football Association was formed in London in October 1863 when representatives
of eleven clubs and schools met in an attempt to standardize the rules
of the game. One of the rules prohibited the carrying of the ball, a
rule that would lead to the Rugby-oriented clubs leaving the
Association several months later. The name Association Football was
coined to distinguish it from Rugby.

By 1889, the abbreviation socca' was in use, and the spelling soccer
had made its appearance by 1895.

good thing they didn't go in a different direction and call it "foccer" or something.

They could have called it Asso!

I don't understand how you can't like both. I'm much better at footie starting varsity my sophomore year where I didn't start varsity for gridiron until I was a senior. But I guess a lot of that has to do with needing more size and strength to play gridiron.
