sounds like a ground loop. does this occur when the computer is not plugged in (if it is a laptop, if not then obviously it won't work without being plugged in)? anyway i'd suggest getting a ground loop isolator, they don't cost much.

yeah it's a laptop that is always plugged in (makes me think why i even got a laptop). Do they sell these cables at like radio shack or something?

maybe thats the problem. the cable i was using is going from a headphone jack then split into the R n L male parts or w/e u call them.

All I know is, it totally solved my problem with "hum" noise. I know it colors the sound, but it's the best option besides getting an ext. sound card.

I believe it's possible to solder your own plug too, but just don't connect the ground. If you have a earth loop you just need to be able to lift the ground on one side of the cable to get rid of the humming.

For ground loops, yes those Radio Shack RCA isolators do work. Solved a problem for me running my mixer to my receiver in the living room... that was of course a "hum" sound.

If you are getting a distorted sound, make sure you're not plugged into a phono input.
