Dunno 3am lockout trial for Sydney

Anyone been following this?

quote:
It’s been labeled by the NSW Police Force as a way of reducing alcohol-related crime in the city, and for six months the trial will see a 3am lockout in place on the weekends. There’s a statewide 3am lockout in Queensland, could Sydney be next?

The six-month trial will see glassware removed from licensed premises after 11pm, as well as a 3am lockout in place on the weekends: which means patrons inside the premises are able to remain, but those seeking entry after 3am will be turned away. It’ll be voluntary for licensed premises in the city with a focus on George Street in particular, and premises taking part in the trial will include hotels, karaoke bars, restaurants and of course, nightclubs. The NSW Police claim a high number of venues have agreed to take part, with the lockouts already in place at some premises.

“It has been identified that 3am onwards in the area on weekends is a peak time for alcohol-related crime and anti-social behaviour with groups of often intoxicated people moving between licensed premises,” it was claimed in a statement from the NSW Police. “It is hoped that the lock-out strategy will reduce this behaviour.”

While from the outset it may not seem like an unreasonable concept to many people, the trial has certainly ruffled feathers in the Sydney clubbing community. It was only last year that the Queensland Parliament extended the 3am lockout that was trialed in Brisbane to the whole of the state, and some of the criticisms leveled at the move are that’s it’s merely a ‘band-aid’ solution that doesn’t treat the underlying issues that cause the violence in the first place. It’s also been slammed for hurting the bottom line of nightclubs that trade on a late-night clientele, leading to job losses in the industry.

And that’s not to mention the restrictions on civil liberties of the punters themselves. Your right to ‘club-hop’ across venues to catch different acts has been limited to your last stop at 3am; you’re no longer permitted to go outside for a smoke; and you also won’t be permitted to enter a venue to use the toilets, for example. It’s also seen by some as a threat to the safety of clubbers: if you inadvertently go outside, only to discover on your return that it’s now past 3am, you can’t get back inside to rejoin your friends and you’re left to fend for yourself on the city streets.

Punishing all for the actions of a few is never a good approach, imho.

Honestly, how could anyone think that this blanket curfew is going to do more good than it is harm? The decision to implement this is being made by a couple of government mooks who have no experience of life outside their homes past 1am and are doing this purely for their own agendas, making them seem like moral soldiers when in reality, it's just a proposed band-aid solution to an overhyped problem for clueless people to look at and go "wow they're doing something to benefit our city!". The government are simply too lazy to put proper countermeasures in place (such as more patrolling police officers) in troubled areas and hotspots for voilence and instead propose something which will also negatively impact venues that have very little/no history of violence.

From all accounts, the 3am blanket has fucked Brisbane nightlife up and if it spreads to the Cross etc Sydney will be next (it's already started in a few places in the CBD along Pitt st. etc). Public transport is another major issue which these clowns have somehow managed to overlook - yet more proof there has been close to no research done. 3am is changeover time for cabs, even now, without every man and his dog trying to find a cab at 3am it is nearly impossible to get one .. couple that with no trains running and lack of buses and you have yourself human gridlock.

Plus i really don't think that sending a bunch of drunks to all converge in the city/cross at the same time is going to impede violence, if anything its going to make it more likely.

They brought them in down in Tassie recently and I haven't noticed too much of a problem, except once when I forgot and couldn't get in.

Thing is, I'm normally IN the club, so I don't notice the wankers on the outside

catching a cab is a right pain, at least in hobart. you now have people wandering around at 3am coz they missed out, though this problem has lessened as people got used to it.

never been a fan of governments telling business when they can and cannot trade.

Oh noes! No more revs/161 at 6am!

When does the lockout finish?

If venues were allowed to start letting people back in at 8am, that's okay, because no one goes to revs before then anyway.
