Do dj's listen to other genres?

I always had this question.

Does anyone know if any famous dj's have a broad music taste?

How do dj's find time to listen to anything else other than the genre that they play?

I don't see why they wouldn't- if you look at the biographies of some of the major acts today, much of their influence lies outside their existing genre of focus. I don't see why they wouldn't continue to enjoy and listen to it on occasion, in addition to newer material, when not sifting through records and promo material.

I'm sure they find time for it in the same way they find time for everything else in their lives.

Here's a little excerpt from an old interview with Digweed that relates to the subject:

"Do you listen to other kinds of music?

I like the Coldplay album. I really like Pink Floyd, I like stuff like the Vangeli soundtrack, you know, bits of chilled out stuff, really."

Complete interview

Yeah, I think if you like music enough to be a DJ, then you should like a lot of different types. TBH, the only times I really listen to EDM is when I'm looking for new music, or spinning it. There are rare occasions that I'll listen in the car and what not, but for the most part its checking the track out on beatport or wherever, and then listening to it in a CDJ.

Granted im unemployed and have a lot of time to listen to it on the CDJ, but still.....

I probably listen to more music from genres other than what I spin than from those that I do.

For electronic music, especially other DJ's, if another jock's tracklist is too similar to my own at a given point in time, I probably won't care to listen regardless of how good/great/grand they are, and not because I don't think they're talented, I just don't. Tough one to explain.

I still listen to a fair bit of just about everything that has influenced me to this point, from jazz to trance - and I think having such a broad palette serves only to make me a better DJ.

Yeah it's understandable. You can't learn anything from something you already know and time is always limited.

To answer the question, I think most DJ's do. There is always going to be more music being put out and as a DJ, it never hurts to know more and more.

Djs are still humang beings, and we all get tired of the same stuff when we listen to it for a long time, and I think that its neccessary to listen to other stuff to appreciate your own musical style more, even if you dont like other music so much

You can tell the DJs that dont, they're shite. I don't believe that anyone with such narrow music tastes just to listen to one genre can ever really be a good DJ. A good jukebox perhaps...

Note this doesnt mean that having a broad musical taste makes you a good DJ.

I think just listening to one genre of EDM would be incredibly boring. I mix the more upbeat side of electro house mainly, but I'll listen to anything from Richie Hawtin to BK depending on my mood, then also lots of alt/punk/rock etc.

I think electronic music in general is listened to on top of other things, there are lots of people who listen to just rock or whatever, but you don't find many people who *only* listen to dance.

if you listened to just one genre of music you would get very bored.

"variety is the spice of life" - had to be said.
