anyone got any good ideas about how to find a good & cheap hotel in new york? any price comparison websites or any information well appreciated. thanks.

My parents stay at the Days Hotel on W94th. Its uptown, but its a GREAT neighborhood and is literally steps from the express train (2 & 3), so you can be in midtown in 5 minutes.

Definately, it'd probably be cheaper for you to sublet a place for a month than to stay in a manhattan apartment for a week. Or, consider a hostel if you JUST need a place to crash. Depends how much you are looking to spend. Either way, you can do better than the $100-250+/night rates that hotels are going to charge you.
