Logic 5.5 question bouncing, recording clipping

Hello. I have a question about logic 5.5 Pc. ive been bouncing audio tracks and instruments now to try to save some CPU. Now my question is really. in Logic i feel as if when i bounce my Full track the result comes out a lot lower. then original.. Is there a different way to i guess record the full track when it done or is the bounce feature the way to go.. Is there anything anyone who uses Logic 5.5 for Pc can maybe give me some tips on what to do?

Thanks in advance

I bounce to audio now and then when using extreme CPU comsuming plug-ins and this has never been a problem. Just solo the channel you want to bounce, bounce it and import the result right back on an audio channel (make sure it's stereo if you boucned a stereo track). The soloed track and the bounced track now should sound the same. Do you use Logic 5.5.1?

Cheers

i used to use 5.5.1 a while ago . now just 5.5 ( is there any big difference ).. But thats what i do. well when i bounce seperate audio tracks i solo then bounce. then normalize., but i am talking about when i bounce the complete track i click bounce under [Output 1-2] to wav. and then convert to mp3. I am also getting a lot of clipping going on . even just straight Kick and Clap. i get clipping and there both at 0.0db. so then i start lowering the volumes a little but i lower and lower. to get rid of clipping. Is that normal.. I set the kick to Mono. and clap to Stereo.

Did you get this trouble with 5.5.1? If I remember correctly 5.5 had a lot more bugs. I would also open up the bounced wave file in a wave editor and normalize/master before converting to mp3.

As I remember it the difference between 5.5 and 5.5.1 was mainly bug fixes, so there's really no reason to stick with 5.5.

As to the main problem, do you mean that you get no clipping at all when playing in logic, no peaks above 0 on the master level meter? And when bonced you suddenly get clipping?

Cheers

No I am getting cipping from point A. Like when lets say i start a new track and start off by adding a Kick and a Clap. both at 0.0. But i still see that its clipping in the output1-2 meter. Master level is at 0 as well. but no meter for that. just a meter in output 1-2 and its clipping. and right off the bat i have to lower the kick and clap to stop the clipping. and its like clipping over. by 2.3 sometimes less. even if i lower the level 2.3 its still clipping I high pass the clap . still clipping even a little more than with no hi pass-filter

Well, I'm note sure exactly where the problem lies. Having the a channel volume set at 0.0 does not mean that that channel won't clip, because it depends on the synth or sampler playing (for example some old ReFx synths are extremy loud). And even if you get the kick to peak at 0.0, the over all volume will for sure clip when you add the clap to the mix, since they're palying at the same notes sometimes (ususally).

Sometimes I have to lower the individual channel as much as -8 dB or more to avoid master channel peaking too high. As mentioned before in this thread I usually have my tracks peak at -3 dB on the master channel.

And as always, to make your drums a little louder without peaking too high, add some gentle compression (Logic's built in compressor works fine for this).

And you don't have a limiter or so in the master channel, right? Cause that can cause lot's of problems like this.

If you still get a problem with this you could send me the Logic project file and I'll have a look.

Regards

I used to get a similar problem in Cubase when my Virus Ti Synth was turned on before I opened Cubase. Because the Virus has it's own inbuilt sound card I eventually noticed that in my control Panel (both Windows + Cubase) the default sound card had switched to the Virus. This caused all kinds of clipping when it should be no where near those levels.

All I had to do was close Cubase go in to the Windows control Panel and select my actual sound card (at the time I had and M-Audio Firewire 410) and the problem was fixed. Do you have 2 sound cards in your PC??

Tuning problem
Check this first to see if your settings are ok
Go to AUDIO next to file and edit
Select Audio Preferences
TAB AUDIO

Check if GLOBAL INSTRUMENT TUNE is on 0

Thats on -2 i guess so that will cause the error
And since your on this page now also mark
AUDIO ENGINE OVERLOAD MESSAGE
Then you will get a warning next time when you record too loud

Distortion Problem

If your main output is not going into the red area
And non of the normal outputs eighter
Then it can be caused by several things

1] Logic sample headroom is set too high
As far as i know logic has no headroom setting
So that cant be it
Headroom- Thats the max possible vollume that the program can reach after it goes into red
Most sequencers allow you to go a lil bit into the red

2] Normalise puts the vollume too high [THIS IS THE CAUSE I FIGURE]
I never use normalise but i figure that normalise will have a headroom voll setting
That will be set too loud now i fear
I never use normalise for that reason
Playback the part of the song that plays loudest
Put the voll so that it does not go into the red
Once ready with recording

Double click the audio file [what you do to normalise normaly]
Now choose CHANGE GAIN instead of normalise
Then hit the button SEARCH MAXIMUM
This will search the peak of the voll in your audiofile
Now you can change the voll CHANGE RELATIVE
Move the DB up and watch bellow RESULTS IN ABSOLUTE -- DB again
The Absolute has to be DB -0.1 as thats your max vollume undistorted
Hit CHANGE and your vollume will be set ok

3] Distortion caused by too much limiting
This has happened to me aswell
Then i used the add limiter on a song
And the WAV end result sound was fine no distortion at all
But the converted mp3 from that same wav sounded realy distorted
Since then i use a less rough limiter setting
And now even the mp3 sounds ok
Soo too much limiting can cause distortion aswell
EVEN if the wav version sounds perfectly ok
I guess that mp3 just cant handle it wel if the wav is limited to the max

I hope you can fix your problem with these tips
If not take a look at my tutor
Here is my snapshot tutor for logic
Perhaps you see something that you didnt already know
Its all snapshots incl acompagnying text
