Well, I'm note sure exactly where the problem lies. Having the a channel volume set at 0.0 does not mean that that channel won't clip, because it depends on the synth or sampler playing (for example some old ReFx synths are extremy loud). And even if you get the kick to peak at 0.0, the over all volume will for sure clip when you add the clap to the mix, since they're palying at the same notes sometimes (ususally).
Sometimes I have to lower the individual channel as much as -8 dB or more to avoid master channel peaking too high. As mentioned before in this thread I usually have my tracks peak at -3 dB on the master channel.
And as always, to make your drums a little louder without peaking too high, add some gentle compression (Logic's built in compressor works fine for this).
And you don't have a limiter or so in the master channel, right? Cause that can cause lot's of problems like this.
