Smiley DJ My TranceSound.net Interview with Markus Schulz

Thank you for agreeing to have this interview with TranceSound.net, I highly respect you as an artist and I was in attendance to your recent performance on 9/21 at Pacha New York.

What is the correct pronunciation for your last name, some say Schulz where are others pronouncing it as Schultz (with a T)?

It is pronounced as if there were a "T"

What were some of your musical influences as you were paving the road to your career?

I listened to a lot of classic rock and R&B, I still do. They are what influences me most.

Do you listen to other genres of music besides EDM; and if so can you name a few bands or artists?

A few favorites are Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley, Pink Floyd and I really like Sade too.

You have had ongoing collaborations throughout your career with all types of EDM artists. How do you go about arranging this and deciding whom to work with?

It is just a feeling, you meet someone and get to talking to them and you just know if there is something there, someone you can work with. Sometimes a producer will contact me and I really have been wanting to work with them. I guess it is just a gut feeling.

Can you tell us how you collaboration with Andy Moor came about for the single "Daydream"?

Andy and I have known each other for quite a while. I was working with him on another project when the inspiration for "Daydream" hit us. It was just something we were messing around with and it developed into what it is now.

What do you think the differences are between the EDM scene in places such as Miami, New York, Canada, and Berlin?

I really think it is based on the culture there. For example, Miami has a Latin based culture and that is going to affect what style of music they listen to, how people dance, what food they eat, all that. The same can be said of all these places. But music will touch everyone. They will respond to the same track in different ways. New York might really respond to a track that people in Berlin aren't quite as excited about.

Many people I know rant and rave about how you play differently for different audiences. For example some may say that you play much harder in places like Toronto and a bit lighter for New York audiences. Is there any particular reason behind that; and how do you decide what type of set you are going to spin?

I think it is very important to play to the audience. You don't want to force your opinions on them. It is a collaborative effort almost. I feed off them and what they react to and in turn they feed off what I am playing. Not all crowds are the same. You have to respond to each one differently. Also what time my set is depends a lot on how I will be starting. The crowd early in the night reacts very differently to how they respond late.

Which venues and cities are your favorites to perform at?

I always come home from a gig saying that was the best one ever, but I think Ibiza summers at Amnesia hold a very special place in my heart.

Are there any cities that you would like to travel to but have yet to do so?

I have just started playing in South America and I absolutely love it. The cities are so beautiful and the crowds are really a lot of fun to play to and so receptive to me. I really look forward to my trips there.

What is your creative process for deciding on track names?

There really isn't a process. It depends a lot on who I am working with or what I was feeling when I made the track. It depends a lot on inspiration and the moment.

Is there any advice that you would give to an upcoming producer or DJ?

Work from your heart, take the advice from those who have been doing this a long time and don't give up.

In closing, do you have any other comments to address your fans as well as the members of TranceSound.net?

I want to thank everyone for all the love and support they have given me in 2007 and I am looking forward to 2008 with a lot more gigs and new music.

well he's DUE to return around then...unfortunately nothing confirmed yet BUT he's in montreal NYE then toronto and DC at the end of January so NYC or Boston are logical stopping places after that. it better be February though. Don't think I can wait until the summer.

To his defense, Trump didn't even really look like a bum.

Yea, turns out it was a simple miscommunication. They thought I had received it all this time but I never got it.

Markus is awesome and I wish he played more in Miami. His opener and closing set for Tiesto @ Space in 2004 was one of the most memorable parties ever!!

I was fuking 19 haha. Such an old hag now.

Anyways it was a great interview and I hope Markus comes in the new year. (Just not the first week of Feb and not at Pacha!! )
